Ok, so I drove 6 hours to VA to pick up a 2015 MK4 that hasnt been started yet. It was a basic kit, with some upgrades. I will probably be looking to off load some parts, and pick up other parts. I am completely new to this, so any help and tips will be well received.
Basic kit with
18" wheels
SS exhaust (sold)
Dash with glove box (sold)
front and rear bumper set (Sold)
IRS complete setup
GPS gauges
SS roll bars both sides (sold)
What I still need (from what I have read)
Front spindle and hubs
both front and rear brakes
Gas tank
Steering rack
Harness's
Lower control arms

First off dive into the build manual and while reading keep in mind photos often show optional not basic parts. You didn't state what you had in mind for the engine and trans which makes it hard to name some other things. I had looked at both basic and complete kits and one thing I was definite on was getting the new wiring. Since the kit is from 2015 make sure you know which IRS it has it might be the older Thunderbird setup. Sounds like your in for a fun ride, the more details you post here the more help you will get.

hey man thanks..
I do have a new wiring harness. I dont know about the IRS, ill have to look into all of that. I started reading the manual the night i got it. I have been on here for a while lurking. I am doing a 306 carb engine, with a tko600.
Should be fun! Label everything. That will payoff down the line after you've started consolidating parts from box to box. (Not that anyone would do such a thing...) Since you still need a steering rack, this is a good time to decide which way you want to go - manual or power. I got the manual rack with my kit, then decided to go with power steering. If you decide to go manual, I have an available rack!

Mods please move to the build thread! Pleasde!
Well, I have been all over the forums looking for the last bit of parts that I need... Between the facebook page, and here, I have almost gotten everything I need. The last bit I need is the radiator, and mounting kit.. So if anyone has onelet me know...
I do have some stuff up for sale. SS exhaust, SS bumper kit, SS roll bars (both of them)
Built the body buck, and moved the body. I have built the coilovers, and gone through everything 2000000000 times.. I should really dive into this week, and get a lot accomplished.

Looks like you got yourself a nice deal! Since it hasn't been started yet, you don't need to go back over anything, which is nice.
I like your garage; great floor, lots of space, tall ceiling, and more. Looks like a great space.
Good luck as you get started!

Steve

Thanks... I built this house 4 years ago, and did the floors right when i moved in. They are in bad shape already, ha. I have done so much work out in the garage, it is almost my main living area. You cant see it, but on one wall I have a tv, which helps with the PDF version of the build manual, and a sound system for jamming out while wrenching...

Some more progress... I have been painting panels and started on the suspension. I am missing half the bolts it looks like. So I had to call FF multiple times yesterday and get things squared away... 65.00 later...
Front suspension as much as I could do!

F panels finished and look great! Really happy with how they turned out.

Rear Passanger suspension. This is as far as I could go, missing the correct bolts!

Lots of waiting going on over here. I did rivet the firewall up, along with the f-panels. looks great right now.. I started to look at engines, called Mike and gots some quotes. I am wanting to do a 427. How much HP can the IRS pumkin hold? It came with the kit from ford racing and has the 3.55 gears.

Still hitting snags. So I ordered the wilwood setup. Got the setup, the panel was cut wrong and didnt match up. I called FF they are sending another one... Started to build the pedal box, the instructions say to open the "secondary parts bags" and I dont have one of those! So i started to inventory the box that I just recieved, and I am missing a lot of screws and nuts, along with some other plates... Only thing on back order for this order, was the rear bolt set that I ordered... Looks like I am also missing the front lower control arm bolts...
Very frustrating.

So I got to finish up the front suspension. Along with the rear suspension (I still need to torque everything down) fuel tank is now in.
Pedal box is built and in. Along with a lot of the sheet metal. I think one more night and it will all be in, well what I can do at least. Most of it is painted, only pieces left to paint are some of the ones in the box. I painted everything with rustoleum high heat primer and paint.

I also coated the underside sheet metal with their rubberized paint. I did this for two reasons. One for all the little tiney rocks that are going to bounce off the underside, I dont want to hear them. And 2 for a little sound deadening... I have ordered some thermo tec, and will be lining the foot boxes, along with the floor.

Not to much as I am coming off the flu.
So, I have been waiting for some more parts... Parts to fix parts that were wrong... Both from Factory five "miss runs" and from me not communicating correctly what parts I needed... Most of the paneling is complete. I have the driver side foot box to finish up, but I am not going to do that for a little bit. I am the wire harness, and fuel lines to be run. After that tranny and engine!!! I think I am going to call Mike Forte and place my order this week for the 427 with a tko600 tranny... The paneling so far looks really good in person, it is a shame I bought 4 rolls of thermo cool to cover the majority of it up! =(
The build so far is a lot of fun! I have a hard time waiting for the parts to come in. Well here are the latest pictures...

So I have been waiting for some parts... Mainly the sleeves for the rear end. It has been a head ache! Multiple orders... multiple phone calls... And Dan, engineers, and parts guys figured out the issue! Wrong parts in the wrong bin... After 4 orders of sleeves for the rear end, I can finally set it completely in place... These are just two of the 4 orders.... Def dont fit a m14 bolt, or the bushings!

Brakes were completed on the front side. I ran half the line to the rear. I am still waiting for the calibers and a mounting piece for the rear. I dont want to run the lines until I have everything in place.

this one is a mix of the wires and what I did for the front line. I didnt want to run it through a hole in the pedal box, so I took it outside the top and notches a hole. This should keep it away from anything that has a chance to rub on it

I am still waiting for some parts. I ordered my engine today. Mike forte 427 block and a TKO 600 tranny... I cant wait for that thing....
I need to order a radiator, engine mounts (kit I have came with the 4.6 engine mounts) and a drive shaft. Since I have not seen one of those in any boxes yet!

Has anyone else had to modify their dash? Do you see how in the middle it is low? I was going to raise the center, and then trim down the ends to match the frame rail. Anyone else have to do this?

I raised my dash to where the center was flush and then trimmed the ends to match the curvature of the frame hoop. You need to be careful here. For me, I had the extra space due to my competition dash. In your case, raising the dash may create a clearance issue with your far left speedo or tack gauge. Either way, you do not want the dash sides above the frame hoop.

I would throw a clamp on that flexible gas line to barb fitting. I know the new push and twist stuff, says no clamp needed, but I just feel better. Did you have any trouble finding a 3/8 inverted 45* flare to 3/8 pipe thread fitting? All the stuff is out there, but getting the parts people to understand is the obstacle.
While going through your thread, I noticed you have a nylock nut on your tie rod ends. Probably not a big issue, but I think the norm for safety is a castellated nut with a cotter key.

Yea I will clamp everything... Just pictures before I could make another run to the store for some good solid clamps...
Tie rod does have a nylon nut on it... It came like that. There is no hole for a cotter pin. I guess I could make a hole... But the build manual says if you got a nylon nut with your kit you dont need a cotter pin.

Good luck with the electrical. That was the most challenging part for me.
Did you end up modifying the dash? The body lip should cover that area you are concerned about and you would never see it.

I am running a 427w with a carb setup. I have two lines running to the rear of the car for the gas tank (one is for sending unit, and the other is for fuel pump). Since my "fuel pump" is up on the carb, do I need to pull the second wire to the front of the car for the engine bay?

Not sure of the gauges you plan to use but what I found is that if I raised the center the far left gauge (tach) would be so close to the hoop that you won't be able to screw the backing plate onto the tach...so you may want to check that before you cut...my two cents.

Updating...... I have gotten some more work done... Forte hasnt shipped my engine yet, so I finished out the ff metal rear battery box. Painted it and mounted it. Finally got my brakes pads from FF, put those in, and bleed the brakes. Only had one connection that was leaking... Fixed that and moved on.
BODY WORK!!!!!!!
So, I have been reading a lot about body work. My budget doesnt allow for me to pay someone. Having never done body work before, it sounded fun! NOT... Although I must admit, so far it has been fun.
I washed the car with dawn and scrubbed it down 6 times....
Brought the body into the garage and let it dry for 4 days...
picked up grease and wax remover from Oriellys auto parts.
used micro towels to apply the grease and wax remover, and a bigger towel to removed it before it dried. Which was fast!
I did 4 applications of this. Then I decided to pour the grease and wax remover on the car and wipe it off...
So I took the gallon can and dumped it on the car. I did 1/4 of the car at a time. wiped it off. I found some different static properties when I did this compared to when I wiped it on/off... The static was huge! If I walked within 3 inches of the car, my pants or shirt would pull towards the car!
Once I was done, I pulled out the air hose and blew off any pieces of hair/fibers stuck to the car. I got all my blocks out (bought dura blocks), got 120grit paper out, and started on the seams. Let me know what I am doing wrong. I know in one or two places im pretty sure I went to far.

Nice thread ... I too am doing my own body work ... for the first time. Jeff Miller, Jeff Kleiner, EdwardB and Gumball have excellent threads and posts in both forums and offer constructive feedback as well.
My recommendation is to also get the flexible foam blocks like these from Eastwood ...

You didn't "go too far". You have discovered voids in the glass. Clean 'em up, fill them to flush with 3M HSRF and move on.

I have no idea what I am doing... But I am going for it!!!!!
Prob used to much high strength body filler.. I mixed some and it started to get hard fast.. well live and learn... so I spread as much as I could, filler in the areas that I could... Over filled parts, with bigger "gobs" in some places... But I can sand those down, just adds more work...

ok ok ok! moving on up!
So I got a a lot of time to work on everything this weekend. Some tips i have been picking up
-DA it with 120.
-using a DA, keep it moving, I have done a lot of wood sanding with a DA so I am familiar with it. Keep it moving and dont press to hard with it. I also wouldnt go be low 120 with it.
-When blocking, hit everything from all different angles. I bought a 7 piece block set, and I have used every piece.-
-HSFR is a ***** to block out!!!
-rage gold blocks out so nice, but it dusty as ****! I did the first round in the garage... MISTAKE!!!!! haha, I did the second/third round of rage in the driveway.
-when mixing the rage, I ended up mixing a smaller amount, working it and then mixing more. I also mixed it hot.
-However when it started to setup, and was getting hard to spread, I trashed it. Just because I am new to this, and complicating things with hard to spread rage was not my idea of fun.
So far I am happy with how everything looks... I have taken my time, and I am starting to like this... Not enough to do full time, but enough for me to say, I did everything on this car! Anyways here are some pictures.

I recommend you replace the balljoint boots with some polyurethane ones. Those Mev-O-Tec balljoint boots normally split pretty quick.
Grease the snot out of all the suspension bushings during assembly. OK, too late, but not really. Body still isn't on yet.
Zip ties on the spring hats to the springs
What is the frame number?
Where are you located? Check with your state registration and inspection requirements before selling everything.

Everything is looking good. I am going to tackle the bodywork myself as well, and I have read all the bodywork threads, and will read them all again! They really are excellent, and full of great tips and advice!
Despite the crazy amount of work, I think that in the end, it will be very rewarding. At least, I hope so!
Keep up the good work!

engine comes thursday from forte.... I got a 351w strokes to 427w with a tko600... somewhere around 450hp and almost 500torq. I have been working on body at night. and I am pretty much ready for slick sand painting. I still need to button up some small pieces on the rear and put the aluminum in, but that will only take about an hour or so. All those damn holes are already drilled!

Couple of pictures today...
bought a new engine crane. Harbor freight! it was on sale and then with my inside track club member ship it was even more cheaper! I ended up paying about 150 for the 2 ton crane.

Got brave and decided to cut the hole in the hood.... Measure once cut twice right??? maybe it is measure twice cut once? I dont remember, oh well, where is my beer!

dropped hsfr in the hood gaps, and all around the cut! Mixed it hot, and let it cook!
http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/briangray582/garage/IMG_20170425_200257.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/briangray582/media/garage/IMG_20170425_200257.jpg.html)
So in my brave mood, I was cutting the hood. I didn't have a saw horse or any extra place to lay the hood while I cut it! So I decide to do it on the body buck, and be real careful about it. I didnt want to over penetrate the hood and hit the body of the car... I did both long sides of the cuts, and the front cut. All came out great! Then I went to make the back cut. I got confident and stopped paying attention. Doah! I ended up cutting the back ledge of the car. Didnt notice it until I was cleaning up.... Son of a *****! Time to clean it and break out the hsfr! fixed that mistake right up!

So I have been forging on little by little.... engine is in the car. bolted down! headers are bolted on. I went with the Gas'n headers. I like the quality of the headers finish and all. Nice Stanless steal. To get them to fit I had to drill out a couple of the holes to a 1/2 inch hole. ate up two expensive drill bits, but they now fit and are snug in place. I do have another issue with the headers. I number four port on the driver side, I cant put both bolts in. the one bolt on the inside wont fit, the piping is in the way.
Hard to see but here is a picture

the engine went in super smooth! I did it by myself in 45 min. The only problem was the one that I posted about not being able to get the driver side mount into the holes. That issues was resolved by putting a bar between the block and the mount on the passanger side and stepping on it. and then moving the bar to the driver side, and repeating the step!

started on the dash. I am trying the carbon fiber over lay.... so far it is looking nice. I first cut and drilled some of the holes i needed. Next i sanded down the jagged edges sand made everything smooth. laid the carbon fiber out on a table that I made (i made a red oak japanese table, 18 inches off the ground. it is beautiful) cleaned the dash, dried it off, and laid it down on the carbon fiber roll. Pushed it all out with a body filler spreader. I then left it alone for a week and a half. I cut the back side and rolled all the edges... Once that was done i started to fill in gauges...

Coil wire says it goes to the negative side of the coil.... I have seen some people with it going to the positive side???
The orange wire labled "Coil" goes to the + side. Purple wire labeled "Coil-tach" goes to the - side.
Looking at your "T" filler and cap... I really suggest that you reconfigure it so that the cap is at the highest point of the system like I show in this one:
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj43/jkleiner/Mk4%207276/100_3158-1.jpg
You'll have a bear of a time getting it filled and bled where you currently have yours.
Good luck,
Jeff

Lots going on here..... LOTS!!!
Got my wiring figured out. Thanks for all who helped... I still have some issues to address... The water temp gauge wire, is wired wrong on the plastic piece side... So i had to cut off the connector and put on my own connector... not a big deal, but time consuming tracing the problem, and fixing it.
I got it fired up for the first time on sat..... That video is coming.... Super excited there.. it is so load, but sounds so good... I took it around the block after I worked out some of the issues I had.. Very small ones... It runs great..
I need to upload more pictures.. but you get the gist of it =)

Been working on some issues. My fuel line developed a little leak at one of the joints... Some how the line became loose.... So I went back and used a better fuel line sealant and redid all the line fittings.... Attempted to set the alignment, at least best I could, so i can go cart it just a little bit.. And then there was the clutch cable issue... which is outlined below...
This is what I came up with... I tried to arrange all the plates and could not get the cable to line up right. I used 22g steal, cut the hole for the firewall cable adjuster(which I ordered off amazon just for this idea) and then trimmed everything up for the other plates.. Once I got everything lined up, I traced the plate onto the steal again. I double up the 22g steal plate just so it was more rigid. I didnt know how much pressure was going to be applied to the plate and if it would hold up over time. Better safe then have to redo it again in a year! Anyways it is not painted for completely trimmed out in the pictures below... But you get the idea!

I stopped posting cause of the photobucket issue, and I havent had time to sit and figure out a work around... So here we are... Back at it again.... I am winding the bases on this build.... I spent a lot of time sanding, applying rage, sanding, applying more rage, sanding more, applying more rage.... Taking a beer break...... 3 gallons of slick sand... Guess what, more sanding.. MOre beer... Applying a 2k build primer.... MOre beer..... more sanding. applying a 2k primer, more sanding and wet sanding.... washing is all down... letting it sit for a good week.... bought the sealer, paint and clear coat..... read a lot, and watched a lot of videos.... Big shout out to miller and klein, those guys really helped with a lot of knowledge and details. Please follow this thread http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?24274-Srobinsonx2-Bodywork I was following along when he was painting.... I was right behind him... My car has now been sitting for almost 3 weeks with the clear coat on... I just need to find time to cut and buff it...
Anyways here are some pictures

I don't think it is too dark. That looks awesome. Man, just fantastic. It looks like you had better luck with the clear than I did. Have you painted before? If not, I am really impressed.
I really do like that color. The second to last picture seems to have almost a pearl like look. Kind of like it changes from dark gray to almost black depending on the light. The metallic flake also gives it a nice pop. I wish my paint had more metallic like yours. Great job.

Thanks man... Yea I have not painted ever before... hahah. I watched a lot of kevin Tetz video's on you tube. The clear came out awesome... I only have one place that is a sag.... and one little one on the rear... I honestly thought that the front is where my run would be...

Great looking color!
Thanks man... I was trying not to copy your style to much hahaha
That looks awesome, especially for a garage painted car.
thanks... I actually took my time, listened to what miller and kleiner had to say... I was expecting more dust in the paint, but I cleaned the garage before hand, started spraying at 430am... and I used a inline water/filter separator at the compressor, and inline water separator "ball" at the gun along with the devilbiss snake. That all helped big time... Since I was shooting a metallic paint... I researched how to paint with it.... From stirring the paint, to shaking it up as you paint to keep it all moving, to laying the last coat in one direction/laying it on while it is still "wet".... Thats what I found when I searched for everything... it was a lot of hard work.... and I still havent wet sanded it yet.... But it is mine.... and I ****ing love it!!!! haha

That looks fantastic. Question. At what point did you remove the body from the car?
Honestly, i removed it after I lined up the doors. I drilled the holes for the hood handles while it was all off... The only time the body was on the car was when the doors needed to be lined up... outside that, I did everything on the body buck.
Looks good to me. Are you going to put stripes on it?
No, I was going to drop black stripes, but I decided against it at the last min..... A) i want matte black stripes. Only way to do that is to put them on after the clear coat, from my understanding. b) I thought it was way above my pay grade at the time... But after i have finished this, I would def try it in the future on the next build...
