Has anybody tryed using an aud 4.2 v8 and tran or LS1 with audi trans ?? the only thing keeping from a GTM and maybe getting a 65 coupe is the high trans cost ( come on a trans from FF $8600) I know you can get a G50 for less but hard to find a good one, Looking around I can get a Audi v8 and trans for about $3500 (yes useed) and it has around 300hp with nothing done to it put some money into it and still be a lot cheaper than a LS1 and G50 combo.

The Audi V8 and trans out of an A8 is not going to be a transaxle, is it?....at least not longitudinally mounted like you need for a GTM.....is it? Not familiar with those...... Got pics?

Yes it is longitudinally mounted , I have an A8 and I would love to see the engine in a GTM. Not sure about the early models but the late models are quatros. You would have to convert it to 2 wheel drive and in that case it would essentially 1/2 your torque capacity. I know a lot of the guy over on the GT40 forum use the transaxles.

Would like to see it Texan-GTM , was just wanting to see if it works, looked fast on E-Bay can get a 4.2l and trans for about $2500 used , $1000 upgrades you have the price of a LS1 alone, and don't have to mess with adapter plates.... and everything is audi not porsche ($$$) hate to be cheap but that trans (G50 or FFs on the site) for the GTM is a Kicker. and if audi 4.2l has 335 stock and could get it to around 400hp sould be good with a hp-lbs ratio of 5.8.

Future GTM Daddy why ould it 1/2 the torqe capacity ??? if anything it would help the it would have less drivetrain to move ( shaft, rear diff, rear tires ......)

It would help in the fact that there would be less parasitic drag (friction) as the whole rear drive train would be eliminated, but think of the transaxle as a torque splitter. The total torque of the engine is split between 2 drive trains which have been engineered to carry 1/2 of the total maximum torque. Now eliminate one output and the total engine torque is now transfered thru say the side shafts. Will it work, yes, but overall it will not be as strong as the original torque rating of the transaxle without serious modifications. The same holds true with the Porsche 4 wheel drive transaxles.

But the gtm weights in at half the weight.

That is definately true! Even with the all aluminum construction of the A8, its still a tank. But the GTM also has twice as wide of tires. Personally I would not be that concerned using the whole Audi system. Where I would be concerned is using a hi output LS with the Audi transaxle.

I think the issue is how wide the engine is... basic googling gives me A8 4.2 engine:
Max width of engine (across exhaust manifolds) = 760mm link (http://www.gt40s.com/forum/gt40-tech-engines-induction-exhaust/23560-audi-engine-info.html)
Where the LS1 is 520mm wide.
Also an interesting read in general: http://www.s4-mtm.com/images/RS4V8-StudyGuide.pdf

Yes Future GTMDaddy but they also have a non quattro A 8 with the same engien and Hp rateing so could not think it would be a problem, like Sasha stated LS1 520mm and the A8 760mm could be a bigger problem don't know the engine bay size of a GTM??? that is 240mm that is 120mm perside about 5 inch does the bay have that much play room????

Considering the LS with headers is a very tight fit...I don't see it happening without a lot of serious work, assuming those measurements are right.

You are exactly right willy, the only point I was trying to make was to stay away from the quatro untis, even though ppl convert them all the time its just not worth the $ and effort. As many have pointed out the biggest problem is the width of engine bay, I measured my 4.2 and the widest portion which is at the cam belts is just shy of 31", the length of the engine looks to be much more compact however than the LS. I love Audis and I love different, whoever does this first will be my hero. I plan on starting my build early next year using the Ford coyote 5.0, I am fully aware and prepared to make whatever modifications necessary. Im really liking that engine not to mention that I already have the Ricardo for it.

Spytech says aLS is a tight fit so an added 5" on both side makes it a deal buster, may have to do some more investigateing, I have seen a company make adapter plates for a LS1 to audi tran will keep looking, still not sure will get a GTM toss up 65 Coupe or GTM?????

Hello Willy - give Stan at Gbox a call - they did a modified Audi case / adaptor and a "built" trans for me - so far it is great, but not enough time or miles on it to really tell. Hoping for an August track day, and will give a full report then.

Done some investgateing and seen on a kit ar forum for lambos that they give the audi 5000 tran a rateing of 450-500hp and Kenndy engineering has a complette adapter kit for the LS1 for about 1000.oo ( with clutch) some thing to look in to.

Are you sure that KEP has the LS adapter for the Audi 5000 transmission? Last time I checked they did them for the SBC but not the LS engines.

You might want to check in to the option of utilizing a engine and transaxle combo from a Audi TT or R8 as this would probably be quite a bit easier to work with.
Just a thought.

How about the Audi/VW 1.8T. It comes in a north, south version and a 5 speed. They say with a cheap T4 turbo upgrade it can put out well over 300whp.
