View Full Version : 460 in a Type '65???

I'm not yet an owner/builder of a FFR car, but planning on it. I recently came into a free-to-me 460 out of a 71 Lincoln Mark III. My intent is to build a 600hp/600lb-ft EFI motor, mate it to a T-56 and stuff it into FFR car.

I understand the Cobras come pre-engineered for the BBF, but, to me, there's no better looking car than a Type '65...so I'd prefer to build a Type '65.

Talking to support, it sounds like all I need is a custom hood to clear the taller deck (sounds like a job for a good body shop), and to fabricate some custom header (I can do this part myself).

Has anyone done this? What unforeseen pitfalls can I expect? How much weight will I have to add to the rear to balance the heavier 460 and T-56?

This car will be intended for primarily track use, with the occasional weekend cruise/show.

Well the 460 outweighs the small block by about 225# you will save A little with an aluminum manifold. Foot boxes will be tight. that engine is A lot wider.

While a "Free To Me 460" is quite a bargain, shoehorning it into a Coupe is going to be problematic.

Looking at the picture below, you can see that the "335 Series" is about 7 1/4" wider than a 302, and 5" wider than a 351, problem #1.

The 460 is much taller, all of these measurements without induction, 302, 20 3/4" tall, 351, 23 3/34" tall, and the 460 at 26" tall. The 351's often have problems with any king of performance manifold, such as a Victor Jr. etc. problem #2.

The 460 is 4 1/2" longer than either the 302 or 351, without any accessories on the engine. This length will comprise the balance of the car without question. This will also probably mean that the foot boxes will have to be modified, with the loss of foot space in the drives and passengers compartments. Not to mention the trans modifications you'll need to make also. Problem #3.

T56, another area to contend with. Being that the T 56 is so long, even if you moved the engine forward because of that, you'll most likely have to go IRS, because the 4 or 3 link will not be able to articulate with such a short drive shat, that the T56 will demand. Problem #4.

The exhaust would have to be a 460 Roadster exhaust, which would also necessitate the use of the roadster side pipes, and that will, not might, require fabrication to make it work. Problem #5.

I think you see what's ahead. Even though the engine is "Free", it's going to cost you to adapt it to the Coupe.

The 460 is too tall. It would require custom headers and a different hood scoop

Using a 460 would change the car to being front weight biased instead of rear. Mine with a 302 based motor is 54% rear/46% front. It will require a 4 or 5" hood scoop and some mods to the foot box aluminum similar to using one of the modular motors. Roadster headers and side pipes would also be required. Depending on the transmission used you will likely need to modify the trans mount. I wouldn't bother with that 6 speed. Too long and no real benefit in this car.

I say go for it. It's your car, do it your way.

Gordon Levy was talking about doing a bigblock Coupe at one time.
For exhaust you could probably use FFR Roadster pipes/headers.

Another interesting note: The frame for CSX2286 was originally stretched to except an aluminum 390 FE.
