Just wondering if it's possible to install the tank and use one of the two openings in the trunk to instal the sending unit later? I'm running out of things to do and making a list. Factory five estimates 2 weeks before they have it in stock.

I believe the new MK4's have an access hole large enough that the sending unit can be installed/replaced after the tank is installed. You should be OK.

Yes, with the proper finagling and swearing you can get it through the trunk floor access hole. If the trunk floor aluminum isn't installed yet neither will be necessary. Option B; pick one up at Autozone, NAPA or wherever and ask FFR to credit you for the backordered part.
No matter what be sure to read this before putting the tank in---you can thank me later ;)

Thanks Jeff. I had read that before. What part number at napa/autozone would i be looking for. Or should i say what application does the fuel level sending unit belong to? Our auto parts guys around here tend to only be able to go by make model and year. Otherwise they are lost! Its almost as bad as ordering at taco bell!

If you have the usual Mustang tank with separate openings for the sending unit and pickup/pump, they're 87-97 Mustang sending units. Widely available. Like this example.

Thanks edwardb. I plan to order the padded dash from them so I will get a credit for the sending unit. Now if only i could source the upper steering shaft locally!

Interesting. The Rock Auto price is several dollars more than the CJ Pony Parts link I posted. But I didn't shop price. Just picked a link from a very quick search that had some decent pictures and in this case even an installation video.

You never know who's going to have the best price on an item.
That really surprised the heck out of me.

Well orielly auto wanted 89 dollars and it had to be ordered. If I'm ordering it I may as well get the best price. A few bucks more for local is one thing but double... I'll wait.

Just asking for a little confirmation here... the two holes on the trunk alluminum, are they for access to the sending unit and pickup?

Yes. That's the idea. The PS is either just a regular pickup or an in-tank fuel pump, depending on your setup.

Mine will be pickup as I am going with a mechanical pump. If that's the case I may go ahead and install it. I will mask off the hole really well. It will allow me to get a little further with my alluminum. Thanks as always fellas. By Monday of next week it should be a full roller! Minus the upper steering shaft of course!!
