Should it be "eight one eight" ? which I think sounds best, as it rolls nicely of the tongue.

OR

Should it be "eight eighteen" ? as pronounced by our fearless leader (and future peresidential candidate) Dave Smith.

I like the eight eighteen myself.

I like the 8-1-8 better. It makes you think less of a number and more of a name. And you can hear the palandrome better when you say it that way.

I like the eight eighteen myself.

if we're to be stuck with the numerical name instead of an actual descriptive word or aggressive name for the car, I prefer eight eighteen too

Maybe it is a North / South kind of thing, sort of like an accent? The New England / Minnasnowta crowd going with eight eighteen, Jim I think also called it that in the video, though I am sure he meant eight one eight. Though maybe it sounds too much like an area code if its eight one eight, but then eight eighteen sounds like a police code.

That's how I've always read it. Same number of syllables, rolls off the tongue easier. Translates to other languages better. (But I admit, "Ocho-Uno-Ocho" isn't that easy to say.)

I guess it follows along with other "supercars" is why I like it. Like Ferrari 430, 458, Porche 911, and Aston Martin DB9 just for some examples. The number designation is in good company.

8-1-8 sounds more snobby to me than 8-18. Kind of like 4-5-8 Italia vs 4-58 Italia.

Prof. Google says the 818 area code "covers the greater San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County in Southern California."

"I've heard it both ways" will just become an FFR saying. Use whichever one suits you.

i have only ever said eight one eight to myself and it didn't even occur to me that it could be pronounced differently until i read this thread title and thought about it. That said i still prefer 8-1-8.

I was kinda caught off guard by Dave saying Eight Eighteen. I've always read it Eight One Eight.

I'm not going to pick a argument over it though, but it's still 8-1-8 in my head.

It will be like with people's lack of knowledge of Steve SALEEN Mustangs. I believe it is pronounced "Suh-LEEN", not the common mistake "SAY-LEEN" (syllabic emphasis noted by the italic text)

I had 8-1-8 in my head, but I kinda like the 8-18, similar to the 9-11, 4-30 or 3-35i. I like Hatchi juhatchi best though. ;)

I wonder if the name will change by the time the final car comes out.

A number works well for an international market, but carries less emotion.
Example. Mp4-12c doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?

With inflation, it will be 847 by the time it rolls into production.

From the time that I saw the project designation, I always read it as "eight eighteen." I never even thought of calling it the "eight one eight." I don't know, maybe it's because, like subyrod says, I've always heard "nine eleven," "three thirty-five," and "four thirty."

I've been saying 8-18 without thinking about, but now that I do I think I like 8-1-8 better.

Tomato, toe-mot-o, either way works. Lets just get used to hearing it either way.

If somebody asks which is correct, you just say 'I've heard it both ways'. That phrase can become an FFR insider saying.

The question remains. Did he eat one eight or eighteen? Why not eighteen hundred?

Someday I Suppose

It's going to really stink if the car doesn't come in at 1800 lbs...

840.9 anyone?

Because the US is about the only country to use the lb unit vs the kg unit. Everywhere else in the world would hear 1800 and think it's a fairly heavy car because they'll be thinking on the kg scale which might hinder sales? 818 is a smaller number anyways so it sounds lighter. :-P

Personally, I'm stoked to see what design(s) they come out with. I've been wanting to build the roadster since about 6th grade. Now I'm in college in graduate school 11 years later so my dream may be close to being a reality here in the next few years and it's exciting to now possibly have a cheaper option. It might enable me to build a car sooner! Way to go Factory Five! If yall need any extra help from a mechanical engineer, let me know, I'd work on some projects for free to be able to do some work for Factory Five.

Well, I'm from Minnasnowta, and as such I KNOW that the correct pronunciation is eight-eighteen. Folks from the frozen north just UNDERSTAND these things.

Are we having fun yet?

I think this has been the best answer.
It would make a great T-shirt.

I'd suggest that it must be because you're from Duluth, where people are known to be a little strange -- but that doesn't work so well, since I grew up there myself!

Actually, I agree with Oppenheimer and Niburu ------- Tomato, toe-mot-o, either way works.... I've heard it both ways. And it WOULD make a great T-shirt!
