Gen 3 Type 65 Coupe R Kit ordered, now its time to get to the details.

I have been racing the old FFR#48 Challenge Car for the past 11 years, and decided its time to switch it up and try my hand at racing a Type 65 Coupe. The aero advantages and frame stiffness the Type 65 Coupe offers sold me on the switch-o-rooney. So, I sold FFR#48 Challenge Car as a rolling chassis, kept all of the important stuff like engine, dry sump, trans, ecu, data logger, wing, and fuel cell which will go into the new build.

Mark Dougherty, Brendan Dougherty and I are building up the Gen3 Type 65 Coupe R starting in December near Hershey, PA, and will be race ready for the start of the 2017 NASA North East racing season (March/April timeframe.) We will also compete at the Grassroots Magazine’s Ultimate Track Car Challenge @ Virginia International Raceway May 2017.

The car will be classed in NASA ST2, Hoosier A7 DOT tires, and will have aero, front splitter, and rear wing.

Stay tuned for a ton of build pictures, and updates! Cant wait to get started! so excited! cant you tell! :)

NASA ST2 (8.00:1 weight/power) rules calculations based on ST2 rules: https://nasaproracing.com/rules/Super_Touring_Unlimited_Rules.pdf

Adds/Deductions with Aero and 245 tires (front splitter, rear wing, diffuser, flat bottom):
Min weight of 2800lb = -.1
Use of 245 DOT tires = +.7
Non-Production vehicle = -.4
Total=+.2
Adjusted Wt/HP ratio formula is (8.00 - .2) = 7.8, to get MAX RWHP for NASA ST2, take weight divided by calculated Adjusted Wt/HP ratio. 2800lb/7.8 = 359RWHP

-------------------------------

Adds/Deductions with Aero and 275 tires (front splitter, rear wing, diffuser, flat bottom):
Min weight of 2800lb = -.1
Use of 275 DOT tires = +.3
Non-Production vehicle = -.4
Total=-.2
Adjusted Wt/HP ratio formula is (8.00 - (-.2)) = 8.2, to get MAX RWHP for NASA ST2, take weight divided by calculated Adjusted Wt/HP ratio. 2800lb/8.2 = 341RWHP

-------------------------------

Adds/Deductions with Aero and bigger then 275 tires (315 front/335 rear) (front splitter, rear wing, diffuser, flat bottom):
Min weight of 2800lb = -.1
Non-Production vehicle = -.4
Total=-.5
Adjusted Wt/HP ratio formula is (8.00 - (-.5)) = 8.5, to get MAX RWHP for NASA ST2, take weight divided by calculated Adjusted Wt/HP ratio. 2800lb/8.5 = 329RWHP

-------------------------------
If you do want to run NASA ST1 (6.00:1 weight/power) here is the math:

Adds/Deductions with Aero (front splitter, rear wing, diffuser, flat bottom) and Michelin Slicks (30/65-18 front, 31/71-18 rear, 18"x12" wheels):
Min weight of 2800lb = -.1
Use of Racing Slicks = -.5
Non-Production vehicle = -.4
Total=-1.0
Adjusted Wt/HP ratio formula is (6.00 - (-1.0)) = 7.0, to get MAX RWHP for NASA ST1, take weight divided by calculated Adjusted Wt/HP ratio. 2800lb/7.0 = 400RWHP

Subscribed. I'm looking forward to the details on the R frame.

A couple of comments/questions:

Fuel Tank/Cell? Size? Fuel Pump(s)? Swirl Pot?

Single seater or two seats? I'm not sure how a second seat will work with the R frame mods.

Do you really need power steering in this race car?

This will be a great build to watch!

I am reusing the Fuel cell from my old challenge car, its a 22gal FuelSafe 34" x 18" x 9.5". Id like to put in a 32Gal cell but that will go in after 2019, when my current fuel cell bladder is set to expire. As for swirl pot, we figured out that if we run 2 sump boxes with 2 in-tank fuel pumps in each rear corner of the cell, T them together then out to the car there is no need for external swirl pot.

It will definitely have 2 seats, R frame mods have no affect on passenger seat area! it is fully available.

Yes YES YES to power steering in a race car. The speeds we are traveling requires the ability to make quick corrections to catch the car super fast, without power steering its almost impossible to do at the limit. I have race against non-power steering Challenge cars and its a clear advantage to have power steering, top drivers going at it, and power steering always wins.

Factory Five will be offering the Gen3 Coupe in a "R" configuration, much as they did with the Challenge Series roadsters, where the car was designed and built to a Club Code and Compliance Regulation (CCR) standard. John will likely have more details on when the "R" option will be available on the order form, as his R chassis will be the first off the jig. Not sure of additional cost.

I had the opportunity to visit Factory Five Racing to see my Gen3 type65 Coupe R frame number 5 being born! I am scheduled to pick up the kit December 30, 2016.

Here are pictures of the frame being removed from the frame jig, and put on the rotisserie for final welding. The R (race) frame starts off as a street frame, then the addition of extra roll bars to make the R frame even stiffer, and most importantly legal for NASA/SCCA/etc racing.

Jim worked with FFR body shaper John C. to make a type65 coupe splitter for the R coupes. It looks awesome and cant wait to see it fully assembled to the bottom splitter (same bottom splitter as the 818R uses.) This will be sold by Factory Five Racing!

Jim also designed and laser cut brackets to mount the giant Wilwood 6-piston calipers to the 2015 IRS spindle. Minor alteration of the stock spindle are required to make this setup work. Stay tuned for detailed instructions on how to make this work.

Are you or someone from Factory Five able to mark which frame modifications are being done to the R chassis? Since the frame is already different from the Gen 2, it's hard for me to tell

I love that front bumper extension. It looks really good in my opinion, and I hope they do put it into production. I wonder with the slight differences on the nose between the revisions, if this bumper extension will fit the Gen 2, even if with some modifications.

Look at that frame. Not a 4 inch tube anywhere! FFR has come a long way w/ their design capabilities. A friend is building a 33 hot rod and each time I see it, I am very impressed by that frame design compared to my roadster. Looks like the new coupe is similar technology.

Jim @ FFR sent me these pics of the R frame mods. Notice the door bars (it jets inboard to let the door hinge work,) rear diagonal bar, front hoop 'gusset' bars, middle of rear top hoop to shock tower, and front bars in front of the passenger. The frame is getting finish welded today, and off to get powder coated :D

Wow, that chassis looks incredible. I thought if I ever built another kit car, it would be a GT40, but this Gen 3 Coupe changes that completely.

Also, FFR should hold a contest to see who guesses the number of triangles on the "R" chassis; give the winner a few t-shirts and a gift certificate.

When those guys get rocking, they really move. It felt like I had the aluminium riveted, the wheels, engine, brakes and transmission in on the first day. It's all relative to my glacial speed of progress.

Our Gen II R coupes look like ancient technology compared to the new R model don't they. I am planning to take my coupe off the road this year and make it a dedicated race car. I am also going to work on getting a NASA competition license this year as well. It looks like the coupe fits well into ST2 so I am going to build my car to that class as well.

I am really looking forward to your build, John. Maybe someday I'll get to race with you in our coupes.

Did the new R chassis lose the 4" main-tubes?
That white chassis looks pretty good. How much stiffer is the new frame with all of the new cross-bracing? (did the old one really flex?)

Yes, the 4" tubes are gone and the chassis is 7-10 times stiffer since adopting the new truss/space frame style chassis. Also, we've seen and sat in the completed car and rolling chassis at Cruising The Emerald Coast on their way back from SEMA and they were amazing.

1. It has a lot more room than the old model and even fit my 6'4" brother with his Gun Boat size 15 feet and 3'0" legs.
2. Foot room is excellent compared to the MK-4 and old Type-65!
3. Once he got in the chassis he fit quite well; however, it was a bit tough for him to get in and out since he's not very flexible.
4. If you are a big dude, you likely can fit in the new coupe.

This is a major step forward and the car is really something to be seen & I hope to build one in 3-5 years.

When I watched the Live Stream (very cool, thanks!) you had problems with the tranny and headers not fitting. How did you resolve those?

My transmission is a super old Tremec 3550, mid-shift, which for the coupe as it puts the shifter in the wrong location. I have 2 of them (one as a spare.) The rear shift position on my 3550 has only one placement, rear rear mounting, where on a newer TKO transmission, the rear shifter position is symmetric and can be rear front mounting, or rear rear mounting location. I will pick up a TKO600RR from Mike Forte next Wednesday and that will solve everything. After all TKO500/600 is the transmission FFR designed the kit for.

If anyone is looking for a used Tremec 3550 fresh rebuild from Hanlon Transmissions with the carbon syncros and such, I have two of them on sale for a good price :)

As for the exhaust, I am trying to reuse the side exhaust from the Challenge car as I know it works with this engine, its been run before and tuned for this exhaust to make the power necessary for my class rules and more importantly I know the dB level on how loud the exhaust is for those tracks like Limerock, Palmer, etc that have specified dB sound limit. We will probably look at it a lot closer next weekend to see if we can get it to work. If not, we will use the FFR coupe exhaust that comes with the kit

Please note these 2 things are not issues. They are me trying to re-use parts I already have, which were in the old Challenge car a.k.a "the parts car". If you were to build this from scratch you'd purchase a TKO600 and use the coupe side exhaust that comes with the kit.

What about a different set of wheels with a better offset?

While hub-centric spacers will do the trick for a street car; however, I've seen many your racing videos and would have concerns about using them at the speeds you drive.

Also, at what speed did your Challenge Car become unstable that caused you to add the Mega Wing & Super Low Splitter?

While hub-centric spacers will do the trick for a street car; however, I've seen many your racing videos and would have concerns about using them at the speeds you drive.

Also, at what speed did your Challenge Car become unstable that caused you to add the Mega Wing & Super Low Splitter?

Challenge car was never unstable. The aero was to get more grip in the turns.

Good To Know & Thanks!

With 5th gear (.75) and 6th gear (.49) being over drives, getting to break neck speeds will possible even with 3.73's out back.

Hope to have some fun at NOLA Motorsports Park (Open Track Days / Not Racing) once it is completed.

have to run 245" or smaller tires for NASA ST2. We will get hub-centric wheel spacers to fix that issue.

Just to clarify for folks thinking about racing this car: You can run any size tire/wheel you want. There is a HP/WT penalty depending on the type of tire (Racing Slicks vs DOT approved) and tire width.

NASA ST/TT Car Classification Form 2017 (v11.1/14.1)

If:
Tire size 245 or smaller (DOT approved), add 0.7
Tire size 275 to 250 (DOT approved), add 0.3
Tire size 9.5” (241mm) or smaller (non-DOT approved), add 0.7
Tire size 10.5” (267mm) to 9.6” (244mm) (non-DOT approved), add 0.3

If:
Non-DOT approved tires (ST1/TT1, ST2/TT2, ST3/TT3 only), subtract 0.5

ST4/TT4 Only: DOT-approved R-compound Autocross tires, subtract 1.0
(Examples: A6, A7, R1S, RS AC, Z214-C90/91)

If you want to run 315 Hoosier R7's on the back you would not add or subtract from the calculation. JohnGeorge gets to add 0.7 by running 245's. It's up to the builder/racer to decide if the additional traction of wide tires is worth the HP/WT penalty.

Trying to figure out all the possible combinations on paper wil drive you insane. Thankfully NASA has provided a spreadsheet to help with running all the hypotheticals: https://nasa-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/document/document/4423/NASA_ST_U_1_2_3_Class_Calculator_2016_v1.xlsx

The calculator hasn't been updated with the 2017 changes.

Here's the 2017 Rules. https://nasa-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/document/document/4272/ST_Rules_2017--v11.5--12-27-16.pdf
Note the FF Type 65 is subject to special rules on pages 11 and 12.

Here's the 2017 form: https://nasa-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/document/document/421/ST___TT_Car_Classification_Form__2017_v11.5-14.1--12-27-16.pdf

What does "add 0.7" or "subtract 0.5" mean?

johngeorge

What does "add 0.7" or "subtract 0.5" mean?

NASA ST2 rules start at 8.0:1 weight/power ratio. You add or subtract from that number giving you the 'adjusted weight/power' ratio.

What are your initial impressions of the new body? The hood looks like it will be an easy fit. Do you foresee any alignment issues or major tweaking required? Does the now hood require less trimming than previous generations? Thanks and great job on the videos!

Driveshaft Questions

Was watching some of the video from yesterday and got to thinking about driveshaft alignment being critical. Could you guys comment on how things differ with IRS and Live axles. From a quick glance it appears you should see almost no movement with IRS so why isn't it just a direct connect?

Secondly I always heard that there needed to be a small matching angle at both ends for a live axle but it doesn't look like the IRS has any adjustability. So how do you set the proper angles with IRS?

Initial fit of the body is great.
they have solved the hood issue. making sure the sides are not to tall.

you can set the drive shaft angle with the trans mount
shimming it up or down if needed.

Dave,

If you only plan on street and HPDE, the regular frame is plenty strong. I ran my Gen 1 coupe in HPDE and several other track day events and it did just fine. The Gen 3 street version frame is over 7 times stronger than my old Gen 1. Also, the R version is more challenging to get in and out of, due to the side intrusion bars.

I guess we will find out, but I'm curious if you will set the front windshield by yourself and/or use some sort of plastidip on the body.

I'm also interested in how the seats bolt-up: to what, need to fab something, etc?

I ordered a road-Coupe kit for early April delivery. The plan is 302-carb'd, TKO600, IRS, stock brakes, power-steering, low-buckets until I decide what seats to ultimately go with.

JC......Very cool that you are converting your coupe to a dedicated race car. As an FYI, we made two sets of jigs back in 2011 when we were developing the Competiton Coupes, before FFR was considering the R-chassis. I'm not sure who has them now, but we could put an all call out for them and get them over to you if you like. Good luck with your build!!

How fun! I left the NorthEast yesterday afternoon headed to Marks house to beat the snowmageddon 2017! The northeast is scheduled to get 18" of snow today, the day I was supposed to head down... So, build weekend#4 starts 1 day earlier

Good Call John. Just looked at live feeds. This is awesome. Can't say enough how valuable that feed is and the pictures above. FFR is really getting some great publicity on this. There were a lot of things that steered me away from the GenII. Now I want to build a GenIIIR for sure. Even if I don't race!!

Nose, doors, and exhaust are installed!

When there is a pending snowstorm in the NorthEast, head to PA early! That is exactly what I did and gave us 2 extra days to work on the car (return was also delayed!) All goals were accomplished for this weekend: nose, doors, exhaust, some aluminum installed. At the end of weekend#4 we are at 15 1/2 days spent building the car. 2 more build weekends left till we are on track March 24-26 @ VIR!

The weekend started off with Mark fitting the nose to the E30 hood hinge by removing material to allow nose to swing up.

yes we are painting it.
well let me say we are doing the rough body work key word rough.

This has been an awesome thread to watch. I am just curious what your opinion is on this kit compared to previous builds. Have there been fewer or more trouble spots compared to the other FFR cars you have built? I know you are building a race car and aesthetic details are not the priority but I would like to know how this went together compared to the others. I also hope you took lots of pictures of the BMW hood release mod. I think that is going to be very popular.

Edit to add: Are there any rear bulkhead requirements you have to deal with to separate the fuel cell from the passenger compartment?

Mark Dougherty
02-25-2017, 08:36 AM
here are the rules for the fuel cell as per NASA 2017
WE will be installing an aluminum cover over the filler neck thus
making the cell outside of the compartment.
AS far as body fit
Doors work the same as before although they were trimmed closer requiring less time to fit.
door strikers are now adjustable awesome
nose works the same although the hinge brackets have been reworked and fit in the middle of the adjustment now
new liner inside the nose is awesome
the rear of the body now sits on adjustable mounts letting you level the body awesome
more trunk room Awesome
more trunk room also means you see some of the raw fiberglass. I dont care for this and will make alum cover plates.
more interior room around the seat awesome
ETC.
hope this helps

15.4 Fuel Cell / Tank
All fuel cells must be FIA FT3 (or higher) certified.
A fuel cell is not required, except as specified by class rules.. All vehicles having a fuel cell must comply with
the rules in this section, even if a fuel cell is not required by the class rules.
1. There should be a solid bulkhead completely separating the fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel cell, filler neck
hoses, and/or vent lines, from the driver compartment.
2. The cell must contain a bladder that is FIA FT-3 (or higher) rated.
41
3. The cell should be in a container made of at least 0.036-inch steel, 0.059-inch aluminum, or 0.125-
inch Marlex, fully surrounding the bladder.
4. Internal foam baffling should be installed, as per FIA FT3-1999 (or higher).
5. The filler cap, line, vents hoses, etc. should be designed so that no fuel will escape if the car is
partially or totally inverted.
6. There should be a small drain hole in the outside box to purge fuel trapped between the bladder and
the box.
7. The competitor is responsible for ensuring that the cell, bladder, and components are installed,
maintained, and replaced per the manufacturer’s instructions and in accordance with applicable
sections of the CCR.
8. The bladder has a date of manufacture and serial number. The competitor is responsible to note this
in the front of the vehicle logbook.
9. Bladders older than 5 years should not be used.
10. The competitor is responsible for showing proof of the age of the bladder. It is highly recommended
that the receipt for the purchase of the bladder (or entire cell) be stored with the Vehicle Logbook.
15.4.1 Installation
Reinforcements may be added to aid in the installation of the cell, but they shall not attach to the roll cage.
Floor structure may be modified to aid in the installation of the cell. Steel location strapping is strongly
recommended to keep the fuel cell from dislocating in a crash. Installing a fuel cell that hangs significantly close
to the ground or one that is mounted closest to the rear of the vehicle, even if the installation meets with these
rules, may be deemed unsafe and therefore excluded from competition.
15.4.2 Rotary-molded cells
Rotary-molded cells are not allowed unless the bladder meets the current FIA FT3 specifications and carries the
current FIA FT3 standard certification mark, label, or stamp. Most or all JAZ and RCI brand cells are examples
of rotary-molded cells that do not carry such ratings. [Notes: A good fuel cell is made by companies such as
ATL or Fuel Safe (other than their entry level models), and should cost $600 or more. Beware of inexpensive
“SCCA APPROVED” cells. While SCCA is a fine organization, the stamp of approval found on some safety
items may pertain to other forms of racing, and may not be consistent with these rules. Consult an expert
before purchase.]
15.4.3 Fuel Cell for Alternative Liquid Fuels
According to leading manufacturers of fuel cells, there is no problem putting alternative fuels into a fuel cell
made for gasoline. However, if the cell was previously used for a different fuel, such as gasoline, the bladder
should be rinsed, and the foam should be changed. The same is true when switching from an alternative fuel
back to gasoline

Is it only flexing at the sill plate?

6 days to finish building the racecar, load it into the trailer, tow to VIR, and run a 2:00.414 @ VIR on the 2nd session out! WAHOO

It is all a blur now, days mixing into each other. I towed down to Marks Friday night 3/17/17, work on car for 5 1/2 days, load it on the trailer tow it to VIR Thursday 3/23/17, test Fri-Sunday 3/24-26/17.

Middletown Maaco finished painting the body, and it looks amazing. It was all ready for us to install on the frame but we still had a long list of things to do before body got installed. First things were to do alignment setting camber/caster/tow/ride height/test bumpsteer/scale/etc.. On top of that we did a full nut/bolt check as usual for race prep.

Then it was time to put the freshly painted body on the frame!

You can see the monumental list of what needed to be completed with numbers which day had to get done.

Finally done Thursday at 2pm, drove it out of the garage to take some pictures! looks fantastic with all the stickers. Harassed some of the neighbors by driving it up and down the street, it felt real good!

We then had to figure out how to get this very low car loaded into the RV, queue ramps on ramps.

And it fit inside the toy hauler with inches to spare and without having to cut any cabinets! Yay! I was worried some cutting was required. We did however have to remove the front splitter and rear wing which is easy enough to do.

Off to VIR now, a 6 1/2 hr tow from Hershey PA. Mark and I drove down in my rig, while Brendan, Sean Lingle and Chris Allen (SpecE30 racer) towed Chris’s trailer down. Brendan defected and will crew on Chris’s E30 for the weekend, while Sean and Mark are with me on the Daytona Coupe.

Wayne Patterson, a fellow FFR Challenge car racer, will arrive Friday morning at the track to also help crew on the car. With Dad not attending Wayne offered to cook for us! Thanks Wayne.

I had rented a garage anticipating lots of setup changes, Garage 9 was to be our home for the next 3 testing days.

NASA events are as such, Friday test day with 4 x 40min sessions, Saturday practice in the morning, qualifying around lunchtime, 25min race afternoon, Sunday qualifying early and a 40min race in the afternoon. We had our work cut out planned making changes every session.

First things first, we had to get the car through tech. Being a new car, it needs a new NASA logbook. Waiting in line we took some nice pictures with the crew (from left to right – Brendan Dougherty, Mark Dougherty, Sean Lingle)

The first session of Friday was to be an installation lap, check to make sure all is well, no aero installed. We identified couple of issues and fixed them without problem. The car felt great right out of the box! time for some aero for the next session.

I start out session2 easy, slowly build speed. The car feels solid, no flex whatsoever, and is neutral balanced, no real oversteer or understeer. Our setup from the old Cobra #48 is very applicable to this chassis!

Mark took a quick video of my driving by at speed. The sound of the car is awesome! White really stands out, Mark said he easily identified me coming down the hill onto the front straight both by sight and sound.

Lap times kept dropping as the session progressed, with me still feeling out the car I set a flyer, 2:00.414! on the second session of the day! Here is the fast lap incar.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhvB6iAorQk&feature=youtu.be

Full session video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLYizBd49D8&feature=youtu.be

What is impressive is the entry of the high speed esses in 5th! at 135mph, and exiting at 141mph! felt super planted no drama.

I am also not maximizing the braking yet as we are dealing with some pad knock-back issues. Top mph was 149mph. The car just works and is super stable, a pleasure to drive.

My complaints after the session were: steering was too hard, squirmy under acceleration and slightly twitchy at high speed. We remedied this by changing the power steering to be more power assist (KRC pump has multiple pressure fittings and you can easily change the feel, I went to stock to what the original pump came with), and adding more rear tow-in to add stability. After the session the crew checked over the car as usual and found both outer CV boots had been cut and spewed CV grease all over the new frame!

http://www.johngeorgeracing.com/gallery/_data/i/upload/2017/03/25/20170325061026-c837ad83-xl.jpg

Mark and Sean cleaned up the nasty CV grease and not having new boots made our own out of a plastic bag and zipties!

http://www.johngeorgeracing.com/gallery/_data/i/upload/2017/03/25/20170325061538-f838f7cc-xl.jpg

We also added zipties to all the grooves of the inner and outer CV boots to stop them from expanding under speed. We should have done this before the event but it slipped under the radar.

I highly suggest adding zipties as shown below in both inner and outer CV boots before you go drive it!

http://www.johngeorgeracing.com/gallery/_data/i/upload/2017/03/25/20170325061543-3ffd480f-xl.jpg

Session 3 we tried less rear wing, and the car oversteered too much. Good! we found the limit! so we set it back to where it was at 8deg instead of 3deg. The racepak dash warning light came on for low fuel pressure in left handers. So the crew fuel cell dived finding the problem and fixing it – I run 2 fuel pumps one of the fuel pumps on the right of the cell had its power wire come loose.

The last session of the day was a fun race. I started mid pac and made my way to the front chasing a fast Porsche 911 in the GTS4 class. I was gaining on him until the hood started lifting about 2″ in the back on the straight-a-way.

http://www.johngeorgeracing.com/gallery/_data/i/upload/2017/03/25/20170325061621-a7de67d2-xl.jpg

I decided to come into the pits, except Mark/Brendan/Sean/Wayne were watching the race and not in the garage. I convinced a fellow racer to tape the hood down and went back out.

Rejoining the race, it got a little exciting as I had to go off-track to avoid a fellow racer from making contact, it seems I came up on him so fast he didnt have time to see me. After the race came and found me, apologized for the incident and was glad nothing was damaged.

What a team! I am so grateful to Mark, Brendan, Sean, Wayne, Jim Schenck, Dave Smith and all the FFR guys and gals for making all of this possible. It took us around 29 days to build from the ground up a racecar capable of 2:00 at VIR! that is no small feat.

johngeorge
03-28-2017, 06:02 AM
Saturday practice we raised the ride height by one turn as we were bottoming out on the frame. We decided to run as low as possible and found the limit! Next session, qualifying, we changed rear camber/tow again based on tire temps. I qualified 3rd overall with a 2:00.591 and was ready to have a great race. The start was fast and fierce with me in the top 4 racing hard, getting into 3rd on the back straight passing DJ’s BMW I downshifted into 4th at the top of the hill and there was a big vibration. I had the clutch disc go bad before and this felt early similar. I decided to come right in to save the car, a good thing as I could not get it back into gear. I coasted off into the paddoc and used the starter to ‘get me going’ enough for the engine to turn over and start allowing me to drive back to garage#9.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3tXBT4lRN0&feature=youtu.be

Brendan/Sean/Mark jumped on the car removing the trans/bellhouse/clutch diagnosing a bad pressure plate! Wayne and I ran for parts finding a stock 1992 Mustang GT pressure plate in stock at Autozone! we hurried back the guys did a great job installing it.

The bad pressure plate:

New pressure plate installed

http://www.johngeorgeracing.com/gallery/_data/i/upload/2017/03/26/20170326221843-c3fbd387-xl.jpg

This job was made much easier by thinking ahead early in the build making panels removable (Brendan gets credit for this!) Glad we thought ahead!

We had difficulty with the transmission getting it back in place, so we took it back out and cut unneeded stubs off the transmission to make it easier to install.

Sunday had 2 sessions scheduled, qualifying early and race in the afternoon. Before qualifying we made yet another spring change stiffening the car further as Im still bottoming out. We didnt listen to Jim’s logic and put in 750lb springs instead of 700 in the rear. The car had oversteer. I set a 2:01 time putting me 2nd overall for the race.

After qualifying we wend to take some pictures of the car.

I had talked to NASA officials on Saturday to see if I could jump in a HPDE4 session to give Sean a ride in the daytona coupe at speed, my way of saying thanks for helping in the build, and was able to get that done. Withe 700lb rear springs we went out for his ride. Respectfully working through traffic we finally got clear track, Sean in the passenger seat bobble head moving forward under braking everytime, we set a flyer 2:00.8, then came in for tire temps/pressures.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5pr_dm60_Q&feature=youtu.be

During that run the fuel starvation in the left-handers reared its ugly head once again, so after the session we all decided time to pack up and head back home. No sense in running a 40min race with fuel starvation! that would hurt the engine which is the last thing I want to do.

We packed up and left for Mark’s house. Wayne flew out earlier Sunday.

Man the car looks like it runs awesome, love the Ferrari pass in the last video must feel good to pass a 200k car like that.

Looking at the car and driver lightning laps at VIR your about 44 seconds a lap faster than a viper ACR. Man that's impressive not sure if its the same track layout tho, all that time for around the same money as a loaded Mustang GT thats super cool. Wish the OEM's would stop adding power and start taking weight reduction to the next level.

Has been fun watching you guys build this car up and get it on the track, performance looks amazing. A couple of quick questions if you had a street version would you feel Air Conditioning required? And are you looking at adding the stock hood locks to the sides or did hood pop open for some other reason?

C&D runs the 4.1 mile Grand West Course:

http://snaplap.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/19183351/Virginia-International-Raceway-Grand-West-Course.jpg

From the map shown in his lap video he wasn't running the infield section, which would explain the difference. His lap is super impressive (and looks like a riot), but not comparable to C&Ds lightning lap, unfortunately.

Doug, I noticed that, as soon as I saw what time John posted I started doing research, car and driver indeed does the long course. Corvette times I have seen are similarly "slower" due to the track difference

I did find a lap time for the imsa by corvettes running the same track at 1:46, but that's not a fair comparison. 2 entirely different racing classes.

I wanted to do a fair comparison on forza but that's dlc I don't have yet lol

On the CV boots swelling problem: The Driveshaft Shop sells their CV axles in a Road Race setup....the only difference from the regular drag race setup is they slip WD40 style plastic straws under the boot next to the axle then install the clamp to let the pressures equalize.

Huge day yesterday, the car has passed NH State Inspection!!!!! :) I am thrilled I can drive this beast on the street now.

The whole process wasn't as painful as I remembered, first I had to go get a NH VIN from state police. Trailer the car to certain locations specified, I went to Machester NH DMV as that was the closest one they had, 8am-10am, bring all pertinent paperwork (FFR certificate of origin, FFR bill of sale, engine receipt, transmission receipt, rear end receipt, brakes receipt) wait in line till its your turn, and nicely talk to the DMV personal. They wanted to see block #s, which on the coyote I did not know right away, after googling I found #s passenger side of engine right above oil pan in front of the engine mount. This number sufficed his block # needs. Once that was done, take the paperwork he gives you into DMV, get new VIN entered into the system after a small fee.

Next step was to register the car. Take paperwork obtained from VIN assignment, along with certificate of origin, and go to your NH town's clerks office, for me was downtown city hall Nashua, NH. I re-used my Cobra plates so have that old registration in hand too. They then registered the car, gave me the correct paperwork to take to any State Inspection shop in NH.

The Dyno shop I use (Granite State Dyno, Hudson, NH) also does state inspections!! yay for me. Car getting a thorough check up, passing without issue.

http://www.johngeorgeracing.com/gallery/_data/i/upload/2017/04/27/20170427221734-6332f3a0-me.jpg

Next its dyno time!! I need 4 tunes. Unlimited, 359RWHP tune, 341RWHP tune, and 329RWHP tune, for my racing class depending how wide tires I run.

The car was a huge hit everywhere it goes! people just love the looks of it.

Car strapped down on the dyno.

http://www.johngeorgeracing.com/gallery/_data/i/upload/2017/04/27/20170427221745-23236412-me.jpg

and unlimited numbers are 365RWHP/376RWTQ! Not bad for a stock 2013 F150 Coyote takeout.
http://www.johngeorgeracing.com/gallery/_data/i/upload/2017/04/27/20170427221739-ebd8ed8d-me.jpg

I was able to tune for 359HP and 341HP, but ran out of time as the shop closes at 5pm to detune it even further to 329HP. That will happen at a later date. The de-tuning is super simple to do with the drive by wire system, I can command the throttle to close partially at certain RPM, think of it as a variable restriction plate.

Getting ready for the first NASA NorthEast race this weekend (May 5-7, 2017) at NJMP Lightning track!

Things on the to-do list include:
change bad axle boots by replacing axles, put zip-ties between each groove to stop cv boot from expanding at speed
pad knockback - install pad knockback springs behind the caliper pistons
pad knockback - Modify rear brake brackets to 'clock' the caliper at the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position
change master cylinder to be bigger in the rear to help with pad knockback by increasing volume and reduce pressure (have too much rear brake anyway)
Mess with rear upper control arm to move it as far back as possible to help with tow change in suspension travel.

So, this past weekend I got all of this accomplished

I had sent Jim @ FFR one of my rotors so he can design the part to fit.

re-designed bracket gets sandwiched between spindle and hub

Unfortunately I sent him the wrong rotor, a 14" rotos, when I run 13.2" rotors.. lets just say it was off by 3/8 of an inch, my bad! So, I had to chop up and re-drill his fancy laser cut bracket, then weld it up as the material I cut off made bracket too weak.

moving caliper to the front of the rotor meant moving the brake line too.. Yes that is CV boot grease, that stuff gets EVERYWHERE. I will clean that dont worry.

Street wheels on and everything fits!

Now to figure out the master cylinder issue.. When we initially built the car I thought the front master was 3/4" and the rear master 13/16". At the track I noticed I had way too much rear brake, and cranked the balance bar adjuster all the way forward and was still locking up the rear brakes. Something was amiss! Well, I found out why.. the master cylinders were backwards of what I had thought, the bigger master in the front, and the smaller master in the rear. With master cylinders, the smaller it is, the more line pressure it generates, but moves less volume. The bigger master is opposite, less pressure but more volume, which is what I want in the rears as it also helps with pad knockback by having more fluid volume it will 'set' the pads faster.

To fix I just swapped them around putting the 3/4" master front and 13/16" master rear. Easy fix! and on a quick street drive test slamming on the brakes now locks up the fronts first. Cranked little more rear and now brakes feel like they works as intended. Mission accomplished, I will set the brake balance at the track at speed, having cable adjuster in reach of driver is very handy.

John, Mark;

The front race bumper/splittter obviously needs to be easily removable. Did you guys use Dzus-style fasteners to accomplish that, or what?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill
we used 1/4 inch nut serts or rivnuts
with 1/4 inch by 3/4 long bolts
much easier to replace when john breaks it

Hi John & Mark: some of the early photos with 245 tires showed that some wheel spacers were needed. Is that how you corrected the gap and are there some spacers that are recommended for our use?

thanks,
boB

So, the female portion of the rivnut/nutsert set into the body and the bolt through a 1/4" hole through the race nose?
