3D design software

What kind of FREE 3D design software have you guys found is best for this kind of design work. I have been messing around with Google Sketchup but I was wondering if anyone new of other software that works better for these complex shapes. How would you compare the different options. Thanks

Take a look at Blender. It is open source, free, and has a pretty good following among hobbyists.

I used to mess around with Hash's Animation Master. For about $100, it combined modelling, rigging, and animation into one tool with some pretty slick features.
