View Full Version : Securing the ends of the dash

I've read several threads where builders added brackets to the frame and secured the ends of the dash. Would these work?

I was just wondering about that myself. Do you plan to screw it to that or just wedge the dash behind there so it cant really move?

My plan is to rivet the brackets to the frame, then use sheet metal screws (1 per side) to secure the dash to the brackets.

Most are just rolled back & held in place by the body but not attached. You screw it in you need to figure out how to get it apart for behind the dash work. Most of the coyotes are running the black box behind the dash & it can require servicing, dead parts changing, so you need to plan for access.

NO NO NO do not fasten the ends of the dash, just tuck them in place.

I say don't....but if you must, you need to have the body on to check for interference.

I'm using an ididt steering column which is wired for signals and horn. Removing the dash would require removing the steering column which requires removing the body. I would like the dash more secure than the ends flopping around

Hi,
I did exactly what Mr. 4U is suggesting but used nuts and bolts instead of sheet metal screws to be able to adjust the positioning of the ears to meet the body perfectly. Nylock at the end to hold the bolt and nuts to adjust position. No problems in 5000 miles. Used those same 90* aluminum pieces to mount the center of dash on to the dash hoop in order to not bury the screw heads under the body. Hope this helps.

I would re-think that plan. But to your question, I don't car for the bracket in that position. If you just shove the ends of the dash into position they sit on top of the stationary part of the door hinge and follow the edge of the body. If you put it where you show your bracket, you get to look at the hinge every time you open the door.

If you want to use a bracket, I would move it outward so the dash is positioned like the red line in the pic.

I agree with Craig and bent the ends of mine to friction fit the body at the forward door edge. They don't move. If you do it your way you will have a gap at each end of the dash that goes forward to the firewall.

Pardon my not directly relevant question... but... ^ NormB... please tell me about that turn signal you have? What is it? Where did you get it? How is it wired?

Another builder with the ends just curved and then the 90* bend at the end hooked on the door hinge support area - not a bit of movement.... certainly no flopping around..... and I have my cold air duct pull / push knobs mounted on the radius, so I put pressure on that area quite a bit.

Thanks Chris. I like that look. Changing my plans now. Also, where did you get your vent pulls? What is written on the knobs?

I think you are trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. Just tuck them in like the manual says. They won't go anywhere.

As I explained to you on FB, more often than not adding brackets creates a problem during body fitting by causing the dash to push the cowl upward. This does not happen if the dash ends are left uncaptured.

Bill,
They say "PULL" and I got them from Hillbank Motors - the parts supplier and distributor for Superformance kits in the US. The actuator cables and air dampers are from PaulProe, one of the users on this site and they closely mimic the original vents.
