In preparation for first start and go cart I wanted to put the side pipes on. My set up is coyote, shorty headers, J pipes and side pipes.
I realize when the body gets on they will need some adjustment. As they sit now the hanger that attaches under the frame is not close to lining up like in the instruction manual. Also I don't really want to drill the holes until I am ready for final mounting. I have the J pipe to side pipe bolts tightened down firm. With the J- pipes to shorty headers loose I can get them pretty close to lined up and have a fair amount of maneuverability with the side pipe since that is a ball and cup joint (have no idea what that joint is actually called) it gives me movement in a few axis.

I see where they sell wedges for the J pipe to side pipe joint. I think ultimately I will need those to get the alignment correct and the hanger to be able to mount where it is supposed to.
At this point what should I do for the start and go cart? Is it ok to just leave the hanger off and drive it with the pipe just connected at the J-pipe? I have realized I will probably be done and be waiting multiple months for the body to be done. I anticipate probably driving around my neighborhood regularly while I wait. Maybe putting 100 miles or so on the go cart.

I am a total newbie to all this so tell me what I should do here and an other good suggestions relating to the side pipe install.

Thanks!

Bolt them to the Jpipe & not to the chassis. I added some bungee cords to support the side pipe but most said it was not necessary. Doubt you will need wedges as the ball joint at the header J pipe is pretty flexible in aligning the pipes after the body is on.

Many only use the rubber mount on side pipe supports; electing not to drill out the top / fixed hole of the side pipe support bracket. Our top bracket hole did not line up either...seems common with mod motors (4.6 or 5.0).

The rubber mount is like a OEM exhaust hanger and will allow pipe to move as needed, while still being supported vertically. I would not let them hang unsupported, even if you only plan 100 miles as go-cart or in gelcoat awaiting paint.

Kevin was there any problem with the heat of the pipe on the bungee cord?

Scott,

I'm with you ... I think the heat of the sidepipe might melt the bungee cord.

I had some zero clearance insulation at the pipe. That said did not run them for long periods of time, just quick test runs. Never did much driving in GoCart mode. Just enough to be sure the engine trans were running well & there were no leaks. Did not see any point beyond that.

If you intend to drive around with it I would do what I did for the final hook up at the side pipe. I used the perforated hanger material from a normal exhaust system. All the auto parts stores sell it. Found it easier to work with than the FFR rubber mounting material.

Also used the same exhaust hanger material as part of the turnbuckle J pipe supports to allow for engine movement & not transmit vibrations into the chassis.

You can put the clip of the bungee in the end of the side pipe rather than around the pipe.
