It was pipe insulation protecting the wiper spring.

Thanks All!

Putting an SBC in a Factory Five isn't that tough, thanks to Randy Jones & his www.gpsconnection.com website; however, trying to do it with that ZF 6-Speed transmission behind it made it a bit of a challenge.

There is only around 1.5" of room on either side of the transmission and the frame of the tunnel. In addition, I added an access panel for the slave cylinder to make servicing that part extremely easy if necessary. The best part of the driveline location is that the center line of the Engine and Transmission is in line with the flange on the pinion so the motor is sitting about 1.125" to the right-hand side.
