View Full Version : Turn Signal/Hazard light issue

Thought I would come to the forum with this issue.

I have the RF harness, and also incorporating the Russ Thompson turn signal system. I've wired the system to allow the stalk button to operate as a Flash to pass when the headlight switch is closed or in the first position (running light), when the head light are on (second position), it acts as a high/low beam switch.

Setup:

Autolite gauges
SPST hazard switch (on/off)
FFR headlight switch
L/R turn indicators

Issue:

When the harness has power, the indicator lights illuminate but do not flash when the turn stalk is activated. When the Hazard light switch is thrown, the indicator lights go off.

What works:

The circuit that controls headlights, running lights, flash to pass, and high beam/low beam function all operates as expected. Blinkers and hazard not so much.

I followed this schematic provided by Russ. The turn signal/hazard circuit is pretty straight forward and I verified my wiring is correct. I started some continuity testing this morning but I am scratching my head as to why the indicator lights are illuminated always until the hazard switch is activated. I read somewhere that the two diodes are not needed in the hazard circuit but I'm no electrical genius so I wired it as depicted.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The good news is if the headlights, running lights, high/low beam, flash to pass, etc. are all working as expected you can eliminate the bottom half (and more complicated IMO) of the schematic. That's good. Unless something is wired dramatically wrong, there's no interaction between the headlights/running lights and hazards/turn signals. So the focus is on the top half of the schematic.

Even though you said you checked the wiring, I suspect something still isn't right. First I assume you have light bulbs in the fixtures? Won't flash without them. I also assume you have the diodes in the right direction? I would take it one circuit at a time. What happens if you disconnect the RT turn signal wires? Do the flashers work and the indicators light properly? The hazards should work with the key off BTW. If the hazards still don't work right, then focus on that part. If they do work right, then check that you have the right wires from the RT turn signal. Confirm which is common and which are the right and left wires. By process of elimination, should be able to find the problem.

Edwardb beat me to it but the first question is---do you have the turn lamps installed at all 4 corners? Without the resistance of the bulbs the flasher unit will not activate.

uhhhhhhhhhh, that would be a big NO, I do not have the bulbs mounted. Maybe I am making a fuss for nothing.

Well gents,

thank you both for pointing out I needed the four corner lights wired to make the turn signals function. I raced home from work today and wired them up as suggested. My first attempt at wiring the rears was incorrect. I found a post from none other than Jeff K. from about 3 years ago outlining the color coding and after re-working the connections, she works as expected. I do have to adjust the brake switch as it's not in tight enough to the pedal so the plunger is not fully closed, hence brake lights are always on. I'm running manual brakes and I hope the pedal is stiff enough to hold the brake switch closed. The switch is a stiff little sucker. I'll get it adjusted tomorrow.

again, thank you gentleman.

not that I need to worry about this solution in the near future but what are you folks using for lamp to harness connectors? Has to be something better out there than a bullet connector. I saw on Delcity a weather pack connector but that appears to accommodate only a single wire/connection. I was looking for something similar but in the form of a 3 wire plug.

Never mind gents, found exactly what I was looking for. Didn't see they also sell 2,3, and 4 ways

Yep, put two three-ways on the front and back corner harnesses. That way you can get the individual lights in/out.
