Hey guys,
Been looking at rectangular tail lights as an upgrade to the two round ones. Has anyone retro-fitted rectangular tail lights onto a completed car with round lights.
If you have please post some pics.
Also any pics of cars with rectangular tail lights on non-modified bodies.

Thanks

I did not use the standard Lucas rectangular lights instead using LED lights for a 41-48 Chevy Sedan. They fit the pads on the rear of the car quite well. I don't see any reason you could not do the same with the Lucas lights if that tickles your fancy. Mod can be found here.

I did my own bodywork and performed some pretty extensive surgery on the rear quarters to integrate the rectangular tail lamps. I haven't seen them on a finished car, but here are a few pictures that show both the original lamp pad area and how I modified it for the rectangular lamps.

Without modifying the pads, you will see a very pronounced oval ridge - especially at the top and bottom of the lamp.

This one shows the original pad with a steel template that I made in the shape of the rectangular lamps' rubber gasket footprint - this shows the difference between the outer edge of the rectangular lamp and the oval pad....

To make the lamp fit the body as an original does, I added fiberglass to the area behind the top and bottom of the oval pad area, then ground the outside down in the rough shape I wanted - afterwards shaping it with filler......

Inside view of the lamp area - hard to tell by this photo, but there is about an additional 1/4" - 3/8" of 'glass in the areas around the top and bottom of the lamp opening....

Rough shape of the revised pads after grinding away much of the original fiberglass.....

Getting there - this is before shaping with filler.....
