View Full Version : Who would consider building a factory five SUV?

I would. I dont know if I would prefer a sporty SUV or a more utilitarian, but either way I bet FFR would nail it. It would be the perfect accompaniment to a FFR sports car! Would you vote sporty or utilitarian looks? (i.e. BMWX6 or Defender 90)?

No, i would not want one or the other!

I could imagine a killer SUV more like the off road racing ones. It would be different than the sand rails in that they would be more balanced, licenceeable, and use knobby tires. The problem would be in how much it would cost to build.

There's been talk off an on about trophy trucks ect. But I don't think it's serious. VMan has done designs based on the 33 hot rod which are cool and I'd be very interested in building.

...Google Local Motors Rally Fighter.

IIRC Factory Five had a part in setting up Local Motors, back when Mark Smith (Dave's brother) was still with the company. I seem to recall one of the FFR crew quitting to join LM. Pretty sure there's no current link though.

Personally I would NOT be interested in a kit SUV.

Wifey said she would absolutely love to drive the kids to school in a topless 33...if it had a backseat. Can't fit them all up front. I'd be interested in ANYTHING that had seating for more than one rugrat.

I could go for something in the vein of a Local Motors Rally Fighter, the Ariel Atom Nomad, Exomotive Off Road, or the 2005 Jeep Jeepster and Hurricane concepts. All Utilitarian in concept, but with a more sporty appearance. 4 seats would be great. I've often considered selling my 818 and getting an old Wrangler TJ (or newer) to have something I could take into town with the whole family on a nice day. Would also be great to throw a tent in the back and head camping for the weekend. With the 818, you better hope there is a paved or smooth grass parking lot at the campground.

Chasing something like the X6 is a pipe dream, you would never achieve the level of refinement necessary to justify the cost (though I think you were getting more at the 'aerodynamic' style of the X6 as opposed to the refinement of it, in which case I would lean that way).

I would immediately buy a Hot rod with more than 2 seats. FFR makes travelling to car shows with the wife and kid difficult.

2008 Jeep Renegade concept also - I don't remember that one. http://hooniverse.com/2012/03/29/truck-thursday-jeep-concepts-from-the-past/

Its true....not many 4 seat options out there for car builders. That said, a GT40 is tops on my list as well. Though a rally-fighter like SUV would be nice and is X6 like in shape (which is what I meant). Obviously interior refinement would have to go a LONG ways to match BMW! I like my SUVs a bit more rough and tumble personally.

It would be nice to have a vehicle that would not be limited by the roads, fast enough for highway, and can jump a hill like a trail bike.

A 33 Hot Rod Phaeton Or Vicki Would Be Cooler Than Cool!
Even A 33 Hot Rod Truck Would Work Well Too!

It's called the GTM.

Most replica manufacturers have stopped offering GT40 clones, maybe because the trade mark/ trade dress is/was better protected than the Cobra. FFR got around that by coming up with the GTM which is "in the spirit of" the GT40 but does not replicate it. No way they'll reverse course and offer a GT40 clone now.

Indications are pointing to an updated Type 65 Coupe.

I checked out the rally fighter. That would certainly be a hit in my family. Price is a bit steep, though.

A 33 Hot Rod Phaeton...

I've been preaching this to Dave for years. It would be an easy addition to their lineup with the bulk of the design work already in place...stretch the chassis and reconfigure the body from the back of the doors rearward. Lots of families with young kids or old farts like me with grandkids who'd like to have room for 3 or 4.

GT40? Not gonna' happen. As Ram said that was what the GTM was originally going to be---then the lawsuits began.

Cheers,
Jeff

I imagine a FFR SUV (or any kit SUV for that matter) being a one-car-donor project where you pick up a low-dollar old pick-up (no pun intended) and we all know the drill. Personally I was thinking less hot-rod and more jeep/bronco/defender/etc. A work truck/people mover. They could upgrade suspension with anything from adding multi-link to full blown IRS replacement, just like the roadsters. Extended cab for back row seats, longer bed/cab for more utilitarian applications.

Just like so many of the performance car makers are doing now, I am sure if FFR designed a utility vehicle to compliment their sports cars, people would see the value. Heck, they have the cars and trailers now, all they are missing is the tow vehicle! For the record, I wish they had made the trailers even more affordable by offering them as a kit as well....just saying. :)
