with the engine mounts bolted, and get pass the 4" tube chassis cross member.
have a leak on new tranny i bought now i have to get the freakin thing out, would like to keep the bellhousing and clutch assembly in tack.
just laying underneath looking and thinking it seems the engine may have to move forward.
any experience out there on this removal, mine was done on a bench and then installed all together.
the bummer is its new and it leaks
and i really thought after my gocart i would just be slappin a body on that is already fitted and primed......:(

It can be done, we've done it in a MKII. The trick is to remove the shifter, unbolt the transmission from the bell housing, move it back about 5-6 inches, and then rotate the transmission 90 degrees, shove it back till the input shaft clears the bell housing, then drop the transmission down and forward to remove. It really is as easy as it sounds, you just need to be patient, and not rush it if you become frustrated.

I'v done it once, it was a real nightmare; the TKO is considerably larger than a T5. Like he said, rotate it 90* and move it as far back as possible. Unbolt the bellhousing, and remove that. Then you have room to get the trans out. Doing it while lying on your back is a royal pain in the neck. Getting the trans re-aligned and installed again will really wear you out.
The next time I wanted to change the clutch, I pulled the engine out. It took longer, but it's less work, and didn't beat me up nearly as much. I can have the engine out and on a stand in about 4 hours; back in the car and running in about 6.
