I had a blunder and dropped my power steering pump and pulley on the garage floor. The edge of the pulley that holds the serpentine belt got a small dent. The belt fits in there normally and it spins freely. The dented area is about 1inch long on the edge. Do I need to replace this part? How critical is having say 5% of the edge area dented up if the rest is in perfect condition? Shall I try to bend it back? Thoughts and opinions please.

The serp belt will follow the grooves. Break out a hammer and give your best effort to straightening the outer edge. It will probably be fine...if not at least you tried :)

Pop it into place and call it a day.

I would add one suggestion. Check the pulley for run out.

Thanks. I am a total newbie. What does checking for run out entail? What am I looking for?

Take the belt off. Place something (screw driver, wrench, straight edge or anything the can be jammed against the pump or bracket) just behind the back edge of the pulley. Spin the pulley and watch the distance between the pulley and the object. If the distance changes as the pulley turns the pulley is bent.
I know a bent water pump pulley will wreck a water pump but, don't know if the same is true for a power steering pump. I wouldn't risk it though.
The shaft will be very strong, I'd just take the pump off, rest the opposite side of the pulley on a solid surface and using a soft faced mallet try and knock the lip back.
It should be fine.

I agree, don't just bang on it while it sits on the pump. That WILL give you runout.
