View Full Version : Oil cooler for auto transmission

I'm in the process of building a roadster with a AOD (automatic trans.3 speed with overdrive). Decided to go this way since my feet are too wide to fit into a footbox with a clutch pedal.
Does anyone have pointers on the installation details for a transmission cooler?
There is no room at all in the engine bay, nor at the rear of the car. So I will probably install it in the front lower opening like some have placed engine oil colers. I welcome any guidance on doing this and thoughts on best routing for the coolant lines.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I ran an earls cooler for the trans in my last Cobra, it had a 7ltr LS with a 4l65e trans.
It was mounted just like an original oil cooler, there was no need for additional fans or air flow.
It had a 3000 stall converter, I circuit raced it, drag raced it and never had trans temp issues.

I ran the lines with 1/2" flexible hose purely so it looked like an oil cooler.

Run it to the front:

Just a note that may help. Keep it as high as possible when you attach it through to the radiator so you minimize the mounting clips when looking at the front of the car. This way the only way you see them is if you bend down and look up into the front opening. Mine is for a P/S cooler, but it's the exact same concept and you have enough room to run 2 or 3 coolers if needed.

Duke,
Good point. I was actually thinking the best place would be on the lower area. Air temp off the radiator would be at its lowest value there. But, you are right about seeing the mounting clips. Now I must balance aesthetics with thermal performance.
Thanks for the tip!

Last question- what inside tube diameter are you guys using for the coolant lines?

A note for others thinking about a trans cooler. A lot of OE coolers are just some tubing bent to look like a trombone. Soft copper from the plumbing section would be just fine w/ a coat of silver or black paint. You could put a small partial flare on the end by hand w/ a hammer and something cone shaped. It's low pressure so a hose clamp will be all you need.
