All of you guys have been an awesome resource. Next hurdle is a alternator, which one?I'm upswing stock 1v pulleys for a 390 Fe and I have the Ron Francis wiring harness.

I used an old-school alternator - the Ford 1G version that would have been on a car from the '60s. I incorporated a reproduction '65 / '66 Mustang harness into my Ron Francis harness, so the entire engine compartment is plug-and-play with the old components. Here's a picture of my alternator and connections. The alternator has a Boss 302 high-rpm pulley on it, but otherwise is just a remanufactured unit from the local farm supply store.
The "Autolite" stamp was done by me - I had a local place make the rubber stamp for me and just used orange model paint to apply the logo.
The brackets are a combination of home-made (top) and re-purposed '68 351 Cleveland (bottom)

I have a new version. A small case 95 amp 3G.
A great resource for starters and alternators is DBElectrical. All new stuff. Not rebuilt.
This is the one I used.

The Francis harness is configured to be "plug & play" with a 2G alternator.

I may be misremembering, but I thought that the 2G alternators had a design fault that made them prone to catching on fire. Maybe it was overblown, but I remember reading that the 3G alternators performed much better than the 2G alternators. I suppose it also matters what your plans for the car are. Will you be taking lots of long drives or only a few short jaunts (for charging the battery)? What electric accessories will you need to power (radio, seat heaters, electric power steering, etc.)?

Lights and running the car. No radio or power steering

The general conclusion was that if the old plug was reused when replacing/servicing a 2G corrosion of the old connectors could cause high resistance and heat that could leading melted wires &/or plugs which in some worst cases did result in fires. The recommendation, which some ignore, is to replace the OEM harness pigtail with new when replacing changing out a 2G. The Ron Francis harness of course has all new connectors...plug them into a new or freshly conditioned 2G and there is no issue.
