Decided to go with the competition layout for the dash on my MK4. I have the gauges placed and now need to find a home for all the ancillary stuff like the headlight switch, which I'd like to place below and to the left of the steering column (in the position labeled 13 below). How far to the left of the hole for the steering column do you think it's safe to go? I'm concerned about ending up on the curved surface of the dash, which would make the switch in the extended position potentially close to the driver's door. Plus it would just plain look bad. In the non-competition layout the outer edge of the tach/speedo hole is about 5.5" to the left of the center of the steering column. But it's very low profile compared to the headlight switch. So I'm thinking something like 4.5" is probably as far as I want to push it. That would place my #13 label about an inch further over to the right (about even with the end of the lip on the bottom of the dash panel). Far enough??

Thanks.

I wouldn't go beyond the the lip at the dash bottom. Boat737s picture shows a good spot. Here's a picture of the installed dash. The curve to follow the door opening started at the end of the lip on the bottom and the spot where the arc changed at the top (above the space between th A and R in YARDE in your picture).

I put my turn signal switch on that side and the headlight switch on the other.

If you're using the FFR supplied GM-style switch, remember that it's fairly large and make sure that you have room to get the harness connected. On my car, that curved cut-out at the bottom of the dash is great for knee room for my left leg, so I wouldn't want anything to protrude below that line.

My headlight switch is located to the right of the steering wheel - it's the one closest to the speedo in the pic below, but I do have a couple of things to the left - including the ignition switch with charge light and a pull handle for the fresh air duct. If you go too far to the left, make sure it's near the bottom of the dash panel, as you will have contact issues with the door when the knob is pulled out (note how low the "PULL - AIR" knob is located).

I don't have comp dash. But, mine is right where Gumball's ignition switch is.

You guys are way too High Tech for me.
Guess that's why I'm the Chevy guy.

Thanks for the photos, guys. Very helpful. Yes, I plan to use the FFR supplied switch, and yes, it is fairly large. Looks like I need to move it back over to the right a bit.

Nice work on the dashboards. There's a huge variety of styles/materials/concepts, maybe more so than in any other aspect of these cars. Really interesting to see the differences in how folks approach this. Good stuff!
