I've had a piece of wire and a few plastic connectors soaking in mineral spirits for a few weeks as a sort of test. Can't see or feel any changes to them. I have my grotesque, entire wiring harness in a big plastic bin. Anybody have feelings on my idea of marinating the entire thing in about five gallons of the stuff for a couple days to clean it and soften up all the tape and goo?

If you'd like to do that, I'd clean it up with Simple Green with a good rinse and a thorough drying. I laid mine out on a 4x8 sheet of underpayment and started taking the harness apart. The underpayment gave me a surface that I could fasten the harness to as I went along. Have a spray bottle and paper towels to clean it up as you move along.
Good luck!!

I wouldn't soak it. The goo and dirt cleans off pretty easy with simple green. Just keep a spray bottle handy and clean as you go.

I dieted my 2002 harness and it wasn't too bad. once you peel off all the tape and covering, the wires are all pretty clean. I didn't end up with much dirt or sticky stuff on my hands at all.
