Surge tank

With my Fe build will a surge tank just be period correct or do I need one?

Unless you're racing without a fuel cell and collector, then you really don't need it. It takes up space and adds complexity.

I think you mean a degas tank - the fill tank that is up high in the engine bay. Unless you have a filler elsewhere on the system, then you will need something that is above the level of the engine and the radiator that includes a cap for filling the system with coolant. Some use a "T" fitting in the middle of the upper radiator hose and others go with a modern version of a degas tank. Up to you what you use, but most likely you will need something unless your radiator is higher than the engine and you have a cap on it.
