I have a 2015 IRS assembly that would work great for someone that is building a roadster with IRS or a 33 with IRS option. I posted in the classified section: Parts for sale!, along with some pictures $900.00. PM me with any questions or if you need more pictures, Thanks Jim

I just had a forum member contact me and ask if there are any specialized tools needed to change the IRS gears. I have never done that job to the new IRS, so I dont know how to answer him correctly. Except to say " I Don't Know "
Can anybody here help us out with this question ? I am sure someone here knows and /or has done it. Thanks in advance

I've not changed gears in an IRS diff, but I did a gear change in an 8.8 solid axle. While not compatible, the new IRS internal construction looks similar. So I think I can give a reasonable answer. I wouldn't say specialized tools are required, but it does take specific tools including an inch-pound torque wrench and an arbor press for the inner pinion bearing. The diffs are set up with various shims and requires measuring to confirm the proper lash and gear mesh. I wouldn't say that any of it is particularly hard, but there's a reason many leave it to the pros. One comment though. I'm not positive the gear ratio of a 3.15 can be changed. When looking at the various ring and pinion gear sets, I'm seeing this message on them: "3.15 ratio differential not compatible with 3.31, 3.55 and 3.73 ratio gears. Use M-4204-MT or M-4204-M Differential." This is something that likely needs to be researched further.

edwardb, I don't know anything about these new IRS units, I think there have been a few that have been shipped and built by now. Hopefully some one with experience will chime in. Thanks for you comments and observations

I'm very familiar with them. I too bought a new take off 2015 pallet much like yours except it was a 3.55. It's mounted in my Mk4 Roadster build. I just haven't taken one apart. I believe my comments are accurate.

edwardb, I didn't mean any disrespect, I meant that I hope someone that has taken one apart and changed gear set would chime in :)
I also believe your comments are accurate !

When looking at the various ring and pinion gear sets, I'm seeing this message on them: "3.15 ratio differential not compatible with 3.31, 3.55 and 3.73 ratio gears. The websites of two different Mustang aftermarket parts vendors both state that the 3.55 and 3.73 gear sets cannot be installed in the aluminum housing differential, only in the cast iron housing version. It appears that the option of changing the differential gear ratio is off the table.

ewardb and progmgr1, Thanks for the info, Good to know for certain ! SO....... Anyone interested in this IRS should plan on the 3:15 gear ratio and maybe adjust your transmission final drive ratio OR just use the 3:15's ! I have built over a dozen ffr roadsters over the years and one of my favorite rear gears from a donor car was the 3:08 gears found in automatic fox body donors.
