After wrestling with the trans to engine attachment for a couple of hours, I realized that there's no block plate to seal off the bottom of the bellhousing. How bad did I just screw up?

Probably not too bad. But you can' assemble the drive train without it. When you take it apart to put the block plate in, be sure to check the pilot bearing. It could get damaged if the trans is pushed in too hard/far.
