View Full Version : Mk3 Upgrading to Mk 3.1/4 Steel Frame Seats

I haven't done much with our Mk3 Roadster since completion, as we were pretty happy with the way it was built. A few small things we'd consider someday, like cup holders, or maybe footbox vents, but the real upgrade we've been wanting to do for a couple of years is to ditch the Mk3 fiberglass seats. They flex too much for me and cut into my shoulder on long trips. Someone with less body weight/less shoulder broadness, they'd probably be fine.

With the recent open house sale I missed out on the killer leather seat deal, but Dave Smith hooked us up after the fact and I was able to score a set of the seats. We used the Breeze fiberglass seat mounting kit with driver's side seat track slider, so my options were to either A) drill out all of the rivets and install the Mk 3.1/4 steel frame seat mounts, or modify what I have (mounts and/or seats) to get it to work. I didn't like the idea of drilling out all those rivets and having open holes (the new brackets mount differently), so I'm going to take some measurements and figure out how to use my existing brackets. It won't be right away, as I have a lot on my plate right now, both personally and work wise, but I do have the old seats out today (also redoing the dash to match the seats) and will be "tinkering" on it over the next month of Sundays or so. I'll post updates/solutions to this thread for those that have a similar setup and are considering upgrading their seats as well.

Lastly, if anyone is interested in our old vinyl fiberglass seats (with seat heaters) let me know.

Thanks!

Mark
