View Full Version : Anyone with radiator spacers run into hood clearance issues?

I'm using Rori's radiator spacers and my OEM radiator is contacting the hood at the cap and preventing the hood from sitting on the fenders. I'd say the radiator would need to come down about 1/2" or so to provide enough clearance. I'm trying to put more of an arch in the hood by sticking a wooden block on the top center of the radiator, then laying the hood on top of it and putting weights on both edges of the hood, but the lip on the front of the hood provides a lot of structural rigidity against this kind of flex so I'm not sure it will be successful.

I know a number of others have used Rori's awesome spacers so am curious to see what others have done. There was mention of the "potential" issue in his part thread but there was no answer other than a couple people saying there should be enough clearance for the hood - however, that is not what I've found with my build.

Certain years of oem radiators had a longer neck for the cap and they seem to be the ones that have the clearance problem. Another builder bought my donor radiator since I wasn't using it because he had the same problem.

This is the first radiator I used. It didn't have a radiator cap.

It does have the bleed fitting to go back to the expansion tank.

Thanks guys. My radiator fill neck is SUPER tall and I think that is what is causing the issue. I don't want to spend the money and time on a new radiator at this point so for now, I've removed the radiator spacers and replaced them with 2 10mm washers which is spacing the radiator up enough to get clearance for the steering rack bellows and hopefully will give me enough room to clear the hood. Need to re-fab my upper radiator mounts now but that's no big deal.

I have also raised my front bumper and fenders about 1/2" higher than the FFR specification to try to gain more clearance as well. I'm hoping it doesn't look funny. If so, I can always lower it back down.

If anyone needs a set of RoRi's spacers, I am looking to sell the set I have. Send me a PM. I thought I saw someone ask about these within the last week but I couldn't find the post in a search.

If you are going to buy a new radiator for the build, why not select the one for the Forester XT????? It does not have the radiator cap and the top connection is on the right side instead of the center. It looks to be the same size, and I believe that I have seen some photos where this has been done.
