When covering the dash and glove box... Does the welting go on the dash or on the glove box door? Also... How many of you used the foam padding and how many glued the vinyl directly to the dash aluminum? I'm not sure I like the "puffy" look of the padding.
Thanks,
Michael~

Hi Michael
I used 1 layer of synthetic Leather on my dash Look up EdwardB 7750 build, He does a nice write up on dash covering. I believe he uses 2 layers of material.
See post #92 of my build for pics and info I too didn't want the puffy look of the padding

This is a pretty low res pic, but if you're looking to duplicate the original glovebox, the welting was around the door itself except along the bottom hinged area.

I've done three dashes: One with the provided FF foam and vinyl. A little puffy for my taste. I did the second with two layers of vinyl. I liked it better, but maybe a little too rigid. The current build I used 1/8-inch sculpting foam from an automotive interior supply store, and that's probably perfect. I used leather covering, but it would be similar with vinyl. Pictures of the last two examples in my build threads below.

I would like to see a photo of the inside of that glove box lid. I have to believe that there's a way to make it look "finished" inside. I have a source for auto interior materials. I'll get the 1/8" sculpting foam and the leather from them. Thanks for the help.

I made my own glove box door, too. I used the cut-out portion as the basis for the cover, then added an inner panel made of MDF that is beveled to have a friction fit into the opening. Both the inner and outer panels were covered separately and the piping was sandwiched between them - similar to the pic above showing no piping where the hinge is located.
I didn't use a piano-style hinge, though, and instead used a couple of articulated hinges from McMaster that more closely resemble the original cars. The hinges attach to the inner panel using some barbed nuts and the inner and outer panels are held together with very high-quality upholstery glue and the lock assembly and nut. The mount that the hinges are bolted to then connects to the hardware that holds the dash to the under-dash stiffener panel.
The lock is a stainless steel "thumb pull" cabinet latch and lock assembly from a local RV supplier and the catch is a small piece of aluminum angle that is riveted to the 3/4" dash hoop. The final touch was a door cable limit strap that is from a '65 Mustang glove box.
Here are some pics of mine -
