View Full Version : Are the Halibrand 10.5" rims supposed to fit this close?

Before getting tires mounted I thought I'd test fit the rims. (It probably would have been smarter to test fit before ordering the tires. I'm using the standard Halibrand replica wheels 9" front, 10.5" rear. There is about 1/2" clearance between the wheel and the lower shock mount:
53838

I adjusted the 3-Link until the spacing between the shock and rim was equal on both sides of the rear. It measures a little over 3/4" between rim and spring on both sides.
53839

The suspension is at max droop so the shock is as close to the rim as it will get.

It looks pretty tight to me. Does this all look reasonable?

Thanks,

Yes, that looks about right. Mine are very similar. I am running Nitto NT555 315/35/ZR17 in the rear with no issues.

Yep
they are close but not to close
that is how you get a big tire in a little car tight.

Yep, normal. The early 3 link hardware didn't even allow that much clearance.

My shocks are mounted with the shaft down, and the body up. Is that OK?

that will work
but
it is easier to adjust the ride height with the body down

Like Mark I also prefer body down on the 3 links but the red Konis don't care which end is up.

Thanks. Sorry to have hijacked the thread, but I haven't even been smart enough to think about fitting/sizing the 17" wheels yet. So many surprises in my future I'm sure.

Build school recommended body down, I forgot why, I'll check my notes when I get home. Dan on the FFR install video also does body down.

It only needs enough clearance to not touch.

Red Shocks on Roadsters, Coupes, 818Rs and many 33s can go body up or down and usually best to go with whichever gives more clearance. Nickel plated 33, Black GTM (or Gold GTM), and Yellow 818S shocks all need to be mounted body down or they will aerate and not function properly.

On the double adjustables the black body for all the cars can be mounted either direction but the clear coated aluminum ones from the 33 or 20th anniversary cars must also be mounted body down.

Who knew? I didn't realize there was a choice. The fronts went on first, and the manual (and video too) shows body up, and I guess I missed the fact in the manual (and again the video) that it shows the rears body down. I guess I'll swap them just to be correct with the manual.

Mark D: Just curious, why (or how) is it easier to set the ride height with the body down? Do you not have to pull the wheel to get to it? Thanks.

Thanks for the replies, now sounds like I've got a ton of room compared to the older model roadsters. Just in time too, The NT05's were delivered today:

Got the crowbar and chisels out, should have these babies mounted tonight ;-)

Just checked my notes and I must have not written the reason they recommended it. I think it had something to do with routing the e-brake cable. Anyway, it sounds like there's no technical reason, just best fit and preference.
