There is simply no end to my agony with this car. I decided to fit the door hinges and guess what? Nope. The mechanism attaches to the door with no problem. But the mating part has no way of attaching. Plus, it requires notching the body to clear the mating part. Do I cut out the curved steel bar that Bruce added and try to weld up some Mickey Mouse mounting flange? Should I epoxy a piece of .080 aluminum to the back of the underdo aluminum and attach the mating piece to it? Strong enough? WTF do I Do?

The MK4 Manual says those chrome parts are not used. Saw some other replicas at a car show last weekend with some that were similar, but I did not look closely at the details. When I got back home, I dug the chrome parts out and it is as you say; no way, unless you modified them by cutting 1/2 of the "ring" out of them so they would fit over the latch part.

Hi Bill
Hard to tell what the spacing is from the pictures. I'm guessing you want the keep the Pin mounting plate with the 4 holes (originality?). Can you dog leg the pin to reach back to the latch on door or maybe make a 1/2 - 3/4 shim block to go between the latch and door to move closer to the pin. Are you going to be at HB Saturday?

It didn't work on the MKIII either. I have thought about it a lot (actually too much OCD). If your bar with the two holes is recessed more than the MKIII you are in better shape. I had planned to machine or grind off the back of the round part of the mating piece making it flat. I would weld a piece of flat to the bar with elongated holes for up/down and left/right adjustment . The in and out adjustment would have to be done with shims of aluminum. I still may do it but it is far down my priority list. You can also shim the other part of the latch pretty easily. It's probably more important on your build since you are going for such authentic looks. Hope you figure it out.
Good luck,
WEK.

I may have found a solution. There is a hole in the body (see pic above) into which the striker fits. I elongated it slightly so the striker aligns with the latch. Seems to work. I will add a backing plate to increase strength

Don't get yourself too locked down yet Bill. The striker will ultimately need to be adjusted across 3 axis when the doors are final fitted.
Good luck,
Jeff

Bill, if that turns out to be the right location, I think it might be one of the neatest yet. My FFR 289 is going to have a bent spacer bracket that should have been autographed by Rube Goldberg.

I found two of these in a box of stuff from Bruce with no idea what they're for. I could use them by mounting them to the curved frame piece and attach the striker to the steel angle.

The hole for the striker and the mounting holes for the bracket would be oversize to allow for adjustability

I decided to go with the striker mounted in the hole in the body. For now a large fender washer is behind it. I'll replace that later with a piece of curved .120 mild steel 6 x 1. I also cut the tops of the acorn nuts off so I don't have to stack washers or make a spacer. It's hidden behind the under door aluminum anyway. It won't be seen
