View Full Version : Loud clicking when trying to start
Assuming this is a wiring problem, have seen some similar posts but wanted to post my exact wiring setup to get some feedback
First I am using ron francis harness, msd 6al and Breeze front-mount battery
Braided ground strap from block to engine mount
battery positive to cutoff switch
Battery negative to lower large post on starter
Cutoff switch to solenoid post A
3 harness wires to solenoid post A
Large red wire from 6al to Solenoid post A
4G wire from solenoid post A to top large post on starter
12g wire from solenoid post B to small post on starter
Blue harness switch wire to S post on solenoid
6al thin red wire to harness orange wire
6al grey wire to harness purple wire

Confusing but I think the large wire from the solenoid to the starter should be on the other large post on the solenoid. The easy way to think of it is the wire from the battery to the cutoff switch to the solenoid should be on one large solenoid post with all the other wires from the MSD and the RF harness. The other large post goest directly to the large post on the starter. The solenoid is basically a large switch that connects the battery to the starter through the solenoid when the key switch turns to start. Hope this makes sense?

Assuming this is a wiring problem,
Battery negative to lower large post on starter
The starter is grounded via the mounting bolts to the engine/bell housing. What post on the starter are you referring to? Pictures would really help here.

Pictures and maybe even a video of the problem. I once tried starting the engine with a low battery and got a very loud and fast clicking, almost grinding, noise from the starter, sounded like the solenoid didn't have enough power to engage the starter gear.

Assuming all is wired correctly (which we think it may not be), the symptom is the same as if battery is not charged enough (loud clicking noise). Need pic of how your starter is wired.

Hopefully these are accessible
First pic of starter. Bottom post is to negative post on battery . Top post runs to solenoid. Small post also runs to solenoid. It is the white wire in the solenoid photo.
Will try to post a video tomorrow.

The battery negative wire should be disconnected from the bottom solenoid post as that is not ground. It is the output from the solenoid to the starter motor. You can connect your ground wire to a bolt that mounts the starter or to the braided ground strap.

Here is a diagram I found on Google. It shows the purpose of the posts you want to connect to.https://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fi.fixya.net%2Fuploads%2 Fimages%2Fzaraki_44.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fixya.com%2Fcars%2Ft193 45658-electric_wiring_starter_go_2000&docid=QnhGOyrjIIMPIM&tbnid=y-MYzh_IUAmd7M%3A&w=473&h=300&client=safari&bih=672&biw=1024&ved=0ahUKEwiHlIX7m6rMAhVR72MKHRdKCz8QMwhQKCUwJQ&iact=mrc&uact=8. It is not specifically for a roadster with a Ron Francis harness so the wire colours may not match but it should give you a good starting point.

Thanks guys. I removed the ground cable from the starter and bolted to the engine mount where the braided stap from the block is mounted. No more clicking. Now I just have to get it to turn over. Thanks again for the tips.
