View Full Version : Flipping the rear shocks on MKIII with Bilsteins

I have done some searches but must be not honing in on the right key word. Even did a google type search to get in via the back door but still no luck.

I'm planning another mod on the rear suspension to complete my project. I went from a standard 4 link (triangulated) to a customized three link with a Watt's link. Now I would like to align my LCAs to be parallel with the frame rails. I have devised a way to move the existing lower shock and LCA bracket inboard enough to align the LCA like I want. This will also move the lower shock mount inboard, too. However, the present mounting point at the top of the shock will contact the shock with the frame. I was hoping to flip the shock to alleviate the issue. Moving the shock bracket at the bottom will give more room for the coil if the shock/coil over is flipped from the brake line.

What I'm trying to do will give me more room for tire/wheel clearance at the bottom of the suspension points. Getting the LCA square with the diff is also a goal (in case there is still any hint of binding). I will replace the front rubber bushing with an adjustable spherical rod end. I will then massage (heat) the rear LCA bushing flanges until they are in line with the front connection point after moving the rear one. That way I can retain the rear bushing. I also want to remove the ugly quad shock mount on top of the LCA.

Worst case scenario: I will have to fab a new upper shock mount. I would rather not do this.

Question: does anyone know for sure if there are any issues with flipping the shock? (valving or any other cons)

Pics are always welcome if you have done a similar mod

Thank you in advance,
