View Full Version : Driver's Door Latch Alignment Problem

I'm working on mounting the doors on a Mk 3.1. The passenger's door and latch went on without a problem. However, there appears to be an alignment problem between the striker and the driver's door. As you can see from the attached photo, the striker is about 1" above the cutout in the door. I tried positioning the latch higher on the door to match the striker position, but the latch lever hits the thicker part of the door near the top. Anybody have a solution to this problem (short of cutting off the striker mount and rewelding which I am unable to do!)? Thanks for your help!

use the other latch flipped over so the lever is pointing down.

Its not a problem its a feature!
Ok not so much a feature as it is what it is. I found posts a while back on the other forum that proved to be the smoking gun as to it wasn't just me or my car. Its not a new problem and carried over to my Mk 4. Both doors on mine were off the same way. Fix? FFR should have done that on the inner panels of the door molds. They didn't so here is what I did. Mark where the latch has to go to work and drill it out for 8-32 rivnuts, try to keep the holes in the metal reinforced area. You will need to enlarge the striker hole in the door. Then repair the lower cutout FFR provided in the wrong place with reinforced filler like tiger hair or 3M HSF. I did both doors in a couple of hours. There should be a update to either the manual so builders know whats up or correct the issue in production.

Thanks very much for the responses. I really appreciate it!

However, I was really hoping to see what FFR's solution is to this problem. It's been two weeks and nothing has been posted by an FFR Tech. Why have an 'Ask an FFR Tech" section if they are not going to repond?

Sorry, but I just had to vent because they've never responded to any of my emails in the past either. I know - I know, call them directly on the phone! However, I just wanted to try this to see what would happen by using this section of the forum.

Thanks for listening -

Bill

P.S. I fixed the problem by cutting off the striker plate, making a new one and attaching it about 1" lower with button head bolts. I'll post pics later.

Glad you could get the issue resolved. It is something I helped a local guy with at his house on an older Mk3 kit. I had to cut and re-weld the bracket.
