I am at the pojnt where I think I should have this car insured against fire, theft, etc. Even though it is still under construction I want to be protected. My State Farm agent can't help without a VIN. Any ideas about how to get insurance? Are the specialty hotrod insurers worth looking at or are they cost prohibitive? Thanks.

I contacted midwest. They offer a classic car/collectable car type policy. Limit me to 5,000/yr miles. No commuting or daily useage. Great coverage for a trailer queen but I am building a driver and I may vioate all these rules the first six months after I get it rollin'. Any other California owners care to chime in about their coverage?
thank you..

Tom,

I have a policy through Midwest (American Modern) for agreed upon value, 3k miles per year, and a rider on it allowing a limited amount of non-pleasure driving (i.e. commuting/errands/etc). Limited amount I think was in the neighborhood of 20 days per year. The rider cost something like $50 additional to the core policy. My motivation wasn't trying to make it a daily driver but I sometimes take the car to a cruise-in or other pleasure event after work so I go to work first. Just letting you know of the option...

I thought that you were looking for coverage during the build.

I am but why not get a good policy and stick with it after its on the road? I never found State Farm to be much interested in anything out of the ordinary. Heck, they could have offered a rider on my homeowners to cover the build but nope, nothing but stock plans.
