Hey Guys,

Im having my roadster delivered on April 30th and I want to get a head start on a body buck. Do you know where i can get a template, dimensions, etc? Any old body bucks laying around in So Cal? i will pick it up :D

Thanks

I tried finding a template or dimensions, but in the end I just traced the outside of the body where I planned to support it, and made a cardboard temple of the outer first. Then once it matched the contours, I used it to make a support for the underside. I used OSB ply for the two body supports and 2x4 for the frame, with castors. No pics I'm afraid.

Thank you... I figured I might have to go that route

Here's a good template from the other forum: http://www.ffcars.com/FAQ/bodybuck02.html

Quick note that may help. I build mine with 1 4x8 sheet of 3/4" sub flooring and 3 2x4's @ 8' long. The sub flooring provides a little more rigidity and helps against the weather. The body needs to be supported, but it doesn't have to fit exactly to every curve so don't worry too much about perfect fit. Your build manual will have a single page in the appendix with how to make it and measurements.

I like the simplicity... thanks

I moved house (actually twice) during my build and didn't want to take the original 'full' buck with me. At the new house I made one out of my own design - a single 4x8 sheet, four 2x4s, casters, and some carriage bolts. It wasn't designed to go outside so I used MDF, but was made to be easily 'torn down' and stored.

Man, that thing is awesome. It looks like with a little embellishment, you could turn it into a bed when you're done with it. Some little person (or parent) out there would flip over something like that.

... you could turn it into a bed when you're done with it.

Funny you say that, a neighbour came by a week or so ago, looked at it and asked why I had a bed frame in the garage.

I've had a number of people ask for the file, so rather than email it out every time, it can be downloaded from my blog (http://cobra.ratsey.com/uploads/bodybuck.zip) at cobra.ratsey.com.

It served it's purpose perfectly but was a far cry from my first one. But then, when I ended up with a 351W and not a 302 which was my original plan, it would have had to go anyway. ;-)

Just an FYI...

The profile given by the drawing linked above on the other forum is outdated and doesn't fit the Mk4 body all that well. You can see the difference between the two on the overlays shown here. Seems as though a lot of folks don't think it matters much, but I figure if you're starting from scratch you might as well use an accurate profile.

The one in my plan is mapped from the one in the Mk3 manual. It didn't fit perfectly either, but it provides sufficient support that it's not a big deal. Probably the most important part is to span the gap between dashboard top and cockpit rear.

I have been waiting for a long time to make a comment on body bucks and now that my car is finished, with all the body work done by me, which was very little and my paint shop owner who is very anal gave the car his ok to paint, it has turned out great with a total cost of $3200.00. And to think that the body sat on two saw horses with foam corners for over a year This body is very strong an does not deform
