I am currently starting to look at my wiring for my build and am slightly confused by the manual in relation to the need for the gauge pod. Is the gauge pod needed when using the Autometer Gauges and 97 donor ?

Yes along with the PATS module and ignition key. Or you can have the PATS flashed off the computer with a tuner or a chip.
