View Full Version : Rear sump oil pan 302 engine
The stock rear oil pan is too deep and hangs well below the frame, what are some of the options I could use

Front vs. rear has believers on both sides. As long as it's adequately baffled, either is probably OK. The chassis will handle either. The bigger issue is you need a pan no deeper than 7.5 inches to keep from hanging below the frame. If you're going to track the car having extra oil capacity is a good thing. For street use, not as important. There are a number of choices either way from Milodon, Moroso, Canton, and many more.

Just a bit curious about the original question. The stock pan from the 4.6 SOHC that I originally had did indeed hang well below the rails and replacing the pan was a well established requirement for all modular builders, but the bone stock rear sump pan on my Ford Racing 302 is even with the bottom of the 4" tubulars, maybe even 1/8" above. I am not aware of everyone needing to replace the stock 302 pans. What gives?
I bought an engine from the junk yard out of a truck that had been driven into the yard dissembled it and had it refreshed at the local machine shop then I assembled it my self total cost $1200.oo and it runs great an it has enough power to scare this 70 year old rally driver
