Hi all,

I am painting my Roadster blue with white stripe and was wondering what whites you have used. I'm not sure I want flat white against the metallic blue, and a lot of pearl whites seam a little yellowy. I do want a really 'white' white. Lexus do an Ultra White but my painter wants more $ as its a tri-coat process, whatever that is.

Basically looking for suggestions of photos.

Cheers

I did non-metallic GM Arctic White stripes on my metallic Red Candy Mk4. Then clear and buff over both. It looks great. No reason IMO for white stripes to be metallic just because the blue in your case is metallic. I would avoid tri-colors if possible. More expensive as you found out plus nearly impossible to touch up. They consist of three coats vs. the usual two. Base, tinted clear and clear. They produce beautiful deep colors, typically metallics, but at a price.

Yep,Arctic White seems to be the go to colour if you want a nice bright white. That's what we did on the blue car.

I've painted both on blue cars and REALLY like the extra flash that you get in the sunshine with the pearl stripes. Although our eyes definitely see the difference it's really hard to capture the effect with a camera. This is a close as I could come:

Here's an overall:

You are correct that there are a lot of different tones in the pearl whites depending on the base color and color of the pearl in the top coat. The car in the photos has Nissan "Pearl White" code QAC which is a very pure white (FYI the blue is Lexus "Spectra Blue Mica" code 8M6). As you are viewing color chips be sure to look at them in the sun or using a UV lamp, not under fluorescents inside.

For a straight, bright solid white the GM "Arctic White" is sort of the default. Of course for a creamier white Ford's vintage "Wimbledon White" is pretty much the 'go-to"

I like the effect of the pearl/metallic in the stripes enough that I've done it with black stripes also when they are used in conjunction with the modern colors that are loaded with a lot of metallics, micas and pearls. To my eye doing so still features the color contrast but allows the finish to flow without a blunt change from a sparkling metallic main color to solid stripe. But hey, that's just me :) By the way, I do not charge extra for pearl 3 stage on the stripes but do upcharge for 3 stage on the main color.

Cheers,
Jeff

Well at least your painter told you up front. Mine just added $200 to the price. Not a big deal, but a phone call would have let me change to one of the other thousand burgundy colors out there.

I painted my 81' stepside Chevy pearl white, I don't think it was a 3 stage. Base color, pearl, then clear. It was more $$ but it was fun. As far as pearl stripes, I don't feel like there are enough curves to really see the pearl( 7 sided media, metallic is 2 sided) either way pick your colors. I'm having trouble with that part lol

That would make 3 stages.

My stripes are Toyota Blizzard Pearl (070). It is a 3 stage paint and is a really bright white - not a hint of yellow.

I agree with Jeff, the pearl stripes look great next to metal flake body colors.

Getting a little off track but here's more fun with pearls. I did one last year in Viper blue and added some sapphire blue pearl ghost flames into the stripes. Again, it's hard to catch with a camera (at least with mine anyway) but the human eye sees them. They are pretty subtle and will kind of come in and out as you move around the car or change the direction of lighting, sort of like a hologram:

Anyway, just something different!

I had mine painted Ford Vista Blue and Ford Performance White. The Blue has a nice flake and a little pearl and the white is solid, happy with the results.

If you are looking for a really clean 'white' pearl that is NOT yellow, have a look at Mazda Crystal White Pearl. The code is 34K. It is a stunning white pearl that I painted my motorcycle in it.
