Bob and Michael made the trip to Bowling Green KY for there first track day with MVP Track Time. They ran all 6 sessions and a saw BIG smiles. I know Bob will be posting GoPro video soon but here are a few shots that I took with my phone.

First of all, I want to thank Mitch Wright for being a great host.
Michael and I did our first track day.
The Track: Beautiful, Tricky, Fast. There is a blind corner call "Deception" that bit me twice. I call it "distraction" as both time I was distracted and didn't enter the corner at the proper angle and as I came over the rise, I was heading in the wrong direction.
By the end of the first day, I had track memorized in my head. This is critical as there is lots of elevation changes with blind corners and even a blind straight away.

All the track workers and safety personal take their jobs very seriously, which help the rookies feel a lot safer. The drivers meeting was very informative. Just had to many flags for this old guy to remember. White flag doesn't mean "One to go".

The crowd was loaded with Z06 Corvettes, BMW's and Porsche's. The big horse power cars were much faster in the straights compared to our 195 whp, But Michael held is own in the corners.

I will also post a couple of video's.

Yes, That is a Lambo 3 cars behind Michael. It was interesting. Every time Michael was about to catch him, He would duck into the pits.

Here is the first video.
This is Michael's second session (in his life).
Sorry about the audio quality. The 2 engine covers were rattling against each other and our gopro mount is broken.
Please let us know your comments.
It is about 20 minutes and nothing real exciting happens.

Well the instructor doesn't have his helmet strapped.
Michael is doing a good job, when you guys come back down for 10/10ths if interested will show you a different line in a few places that are a bit quicker but also will feel more comfortable.

Hey, Michael, I loved it! On a big screen with full volume I found myself leaning onto the corners.

Hey Mitch and Pete,
We will post one of our Sunday afternoon runs that were open to all three levels.
Just takes a long time to upload 3GB HD files to youtube.

Below is Michael's last run on Sunday. Most of the participants had gone home or were packing up. Michael was determined to stay out there until the track closed or he ran out of gas. About 300 hot miles on 22 gallons of gas for the weekend.
Michael was out there running times around 2 min 39 sec. I thought that was great for a car and driver first time at any track day.

Good job Michael, big improvement in car placement over Saturday and very consistent. It is easy to see your getting more confortable.

One more video.
This one was in light rain.
At 5:40 and 14:40 used our single wiper.
At 6:00 Michael got pretty loose.
At 7:30 the Corvette in front of him went off track.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions.

You and your son should be very proud, that is not an easy course to learn for your first track day. Even more impressive is running a 2:39 his first weekend and with cold pavement. Looking forward to the 10/10ths event this May and seeing the car in person.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

It's awesome to see an 818 with just under 200 whp do those lap times. Especially with a novice driver.

I've been questioning my desire to just stay with a hot N/A build, with around the same HP, and these videos solidify that decision rather nicely.

I don't need to beat that Vette or those Porsches (Though Michael looked to be really holding his own against the Porsches). I just need to be fast enough to make the price difference be gut wrenching.

Just for comparison, this video is the same car, driver, and set up on an autocross course.

For those that are interested, I data logged the most of the 4 hours we did this past week end.
This is the first 40 seconds of one run, You can see going through the gear right at the beginning.
My comments:
Boost not much over 10.
Battery solid around 13
Timing comes back to 19 under heavy load and to 17 under no throttle. Is that correct?
coolant drops from 195 to 185 while going fast.
engine bay 120 to 100 while going fast.
at full throttle 20% of time
Waste gate duty cycle high of 75%
Injector duty cycle high of 65%
Is all that good? should I be monitoring anything else?
Boost, Battery, and timing use scale on right side.

I'm using Microsoft Excel to chart my ECU data csv files.
I find it very time consuming.
Is there a way to make a macro that will just grab the data and drop in into a template chart?
Is there a better way?

Well I was hoping to have my car done but having to pay the IRS this year caught us off gaurd and delayed my tire purchase and dyno session. Oh well more time to button up a bunch of loose ends.
I believe Bob and Michael were planning on running.

See both of you there.

Regarding your question about what to monitor, I copied this from the Cobb guide:

Dynamic Advance Multiplier (DAM): This value represents a global adjustment to ignition timing. In general this value is determined by historical detonation/knock as well as the default mapping value. For the 2.5L ECU DAM is stated as a decimal ranging from 0 to 1. For the 2.0L ECU DAM is stated as an integer between 0 and 16. DAM will tend to vary the most immediately following a reflash or ECU Reset procedure.

Feedback Knock Correction: This value represents a current realtime minor timing correction made by the ECU in response to a perceived noise. Feedback Knock Correction is the default correction used by the ECU. The ECU will “respond” with this monitor by immediately removing timing and then slowly decaying the value back to zero assuming no further noise is detected.

Fine Knock Learning: This value represents minor learned corrections currently being applied by the ECU as a product of historical noise. These values are reset if the DAM value is changed; once DAM has stabilized, any learned corrections will be intermittently evaluated for sanity when certain thresholds/conditions are met. Fine Knock Learning is learned (and thus applied) for specific ranges defined by load and RPM; once a correction value has been learned into a particular range, it will be applied whenever the engine is operated within that range.

Knock Sum (where applicable): This is a somewhat arbitrary value that should only be analyzed under the specific conditions you wish to evaluate, such as during wide-open throttle (WOT) operation over a set RPM range. Some later ECUs can report this on a per cylinder level, some only on a global basis. If a noise is perceived, this value will increment at all times, regardless of if the knock detection system is deemed to be accurate or not, such as idle and very low RPM.

There's lots of tuning info on the Cobb website you can download.

Everyone please congratulate Bob and Michael's second successful trip to NCM. Not only were these two very friendly and eager to learn, but they displayed excellent track awareness, and focus. In fact, 10/10ths awarded them the RideTech Renegade Trophy. Great way to represent the factory five community guys. I am looking forward to seeing you all at more events!
