I am finishing up my wiring harness and I was wondering if the VSS was needed? I know the ECU will go into limp mode if it does not get a signal but I have a tactrix cable so I assume I can just disable that code? Reason I am asking is I am not using an OEM cluster so eliminating the VSS will take out one more thing from my wiring harness.

Redfogo,
When I took my car to Turn in Concepts for tuning. Dom told me I needed the VSS. I don't know what exactly the ecu uses the signal for. But I trust that he would not steer me wrong. In my 04fxt engine, I know it is used for cruise control. I may also be involved with AVCS and IAC. I know the neutral switch in needed for AVCS.

The VSS and RPM are used to control the idle speed when stopping. With out the VSS the engine will stumble when coming to a stop, this is what I found on my engine.,

Well then I guess I better find a VSS sensor and get things wired up! Thanks guys

I removed the VSS- Was told I needed it, turned it off with the accessport- Never had any issues and zoomed around no problems ever. I disabled it because I used the 2005 Legacy GT transmission that does not come with the VSS component on it. The Legacy GT used the antilock brake wheel sensors (which I did not have hooked up either).

Hi Chad
nice to hear from you. Glad all is going well with the np01.
I'm running a 2012 5mt that also doesn't have a VSS sensor. I calculated that I needed very close to 5 pulses per tire rev. I put a $15 prox sensor through the backing plate sensing the head of the lug studs. Works perfect.

I think it is worth having the VSS just for data logging.

Chad did you have AVCS?

Yes- 2006 WRX components on a 2013 STI built block. I didn't need a speedo since my datalogger/display uses GPS for speed.

Hmm I guess I will just leave it half wired tell I get the car running and see what happens. Try to delete the the error with my tactrix.

That's probably the smartest route.

Vss also can control the cutoff speed for fan relay. Among other things.
