View Full Version : Shocks. Right side up, upside down?

Everywhere I look I get a different picture, or different answer. I have an MKIV and have the shocks all mounted body side up (hat/spring down)
Then I see a FF build video on youtube and the front is different than the back.
Can anyone put this to bed for me?

The red Konis don't care which end is up so orientation is generally dictated by best clearance. I do 'em body up in front and for the rear I go with body down on straight axles and up on IRS (T-Bird IRS, can't say for the new '15 Mustang version).

For the 2015 Mustang based IRS the rear shocks are mounted body side down.

One other variable is that it does depend on the shocks. The normally used red Konis don't care and can be mounted either way as Jeff said. For other shocks it could make a difference. The upgraded dual-action Konis provided with the Annivsersary Roadster have very specific instructions from Koni that they are to be installed body side down in all cases which makes the front a little different than how the shocks are typically installed. Something about how the valving works. So if you have something different than the red Konis, best to check.

Running the 3-link, much like the video, I mounted the Konis on the rear with body down (spring up) so there is better clearance between the spring and the suspension mounting bracket.

Hmmm, with its body down, the shock is colliding with the lower arm. The bolt hole doesn't align. Has anyone else had this conflict? How did you resolve it? Grind the lower arm down? Does that compromise the strength?
