I was wondering if any Cobra owners here on the site might have any input of Performance chips for the F.I. Ford 5.0 running EEC-IV systems?
I have seen a couple offerings on the market, but was hoping to hear from someone with first-hand experience here.
It is for a modified engine, but still 302 C.I.
Thanks for reading my post!

If you are referring to something like Bama chips or similar they will give you limited performance probably in the 10 to 12 hp range. Even the advertisements suggest those gains. You can also get a "piggy back" chip that can be added to the service port on the EEC-IV. A dyno guy here in the phx area gave me an estimate of $400 for the chip and an open ended guess on how much time spent setting it up and dyno tuning it. He didn't even offer any hp/torque potentials. He said, " every engine is different". Right but after years of experience, a tuner should be able to estimate engine gains to some degree based on similar setups he has done in the past. I figured for that amount I would search elsewhere. So I went with an after market tunable PCM that plugs into my harness. It was around $700 but the potential for tuning is open ended like that dyno guy's offering (except good). I've had mine running for about a week. It is tuned to the point where I can do pulls in the 4000 to 4500 with power. I am going slowly but confidently. There is a learning curve to master but it gives you a lot of options to tune your engine. At some point I will do some dyno tuning with this system but it will be limited to ignition tables. The fuel and AFR portion of the tuning is doable on your own. I'm sure there are others who have done the dyno chip pathway. If you don't plan on doing any changes in the future it could work for you. Plan on a cost of $500 to $600.

Good luck,

WEK.
