So I am wanting to install a fire extinguisher in my roadster.
I am interested on hearing of any preferred locations and pics if anyone can post them.
Has anyone installed a race car fire control system in their car?
At this point I am considering a nice chrome 1LB. extinguisher.

Similar location as rmiller64, but up a little higher to keep from banging it with my elbows. This is a 1.4 lb. H3R Performance HalGuard extinguisher. I wanted it within reach when belted in. Extinguisher's of this size won't help much for a major event, but give you some protection for small stuff and to exit the vehicle. I personally have no experience with a full fire control system, but I've seen multiple threads where guys have shown them. You may want to search the other forum.

Step one is defining your objectives with the system and performance expectations. I keep plenty of extinguishers handy at the shop and in the trailer, so for me it is only about keeping myself alive long enough to stop and exit the car, and for this a handheld is a useless boat anchor. Should a fire occur, both hands and feet will be fully engaged in saving my own life.

For this reason, I'm using an on board system. Due to the unique design of my aerodynamic packaging, I'm using a system designed to suppress in a confined space long enough for me to get out. Others choose a system that focuses on the driver.

On the console have a small "bail out bottle" I can reach even upside down + a larger stand & fight the fire in the trunk. First thing you want to do is get out of the car. Then you can assess trying to save the car.

Bill Cosby had it figured out - the whole thing is worth listening to, but he talks about the fire extinguisher at around 6:45....

How did you connect your bottle to the flange?

Thanks,

With straps not shown in the pic. Nice looking piece.

I like the stainless straps from http://siliconeintakes.com/. Nice quality and price...used them on my air intake:

The Drake bracket isn't cheap, but very nice piece for around $60:

$60 is not bad considering what we put into these cars!

I'm planning an under hood system that will dispense halon via these dispersal nozzles. They are used in a system which utilizes FE36 (so that's what they are tested on). The specific gravity of halon (1.512) is greater than the FE36 (1.37) but the two chemicals do share a lot of similar properties that suggest the nozzles will be effective for the use with halon. Shroud Saftey said they still support halon systems but do not offer replacements for the old halon systems. Both are gases that are liquefied at pressure so the characteristics of the extinguishant flow is a streaming liquid droplets with some gas formation on release for both. The system is very simple mechanically speaking. It will utilize 1/4 inch steel tubing in the engine bay coming together behind the dash to a T-connector. From there it will have a flex braided tubing back to the halon bottle mounted on the rear firewall.

My planned use (not that I ever want to use it) is to use the remote system to suppress the engine fire until I can retrieve a fire blanket and larger extinguisher from the trunk. I will be testing this system on a simulated platform that is similar in shape and size to the roadster engine bay. That is already constructed and I have a mock up engine with valve covers and intake. The fire source will be a pan of gasoline setting on top of the lower half of the efi manifold.

Right now, I store the extinguisher behind the drivers seat but mounted on the fire wall, it will be easily activated by pulling pin and pressing down with palm of hand (mounted rigidly).

Hi cgundermann,

im ordering the Drake bracket for my MKIV, where did you end up installing? I was planning on the back firewall myself. Im fairly novice at this and was wondering if its an easy install? Do you have any detailed pics of how you did this?

Thanks for any advice

One Halon on the trans tunnel, another in the trunk. Billet aluminum mounts, stainless canisters.

If you are thinking of having one of those small extinguishers in the cockpit with you, use a bracket similar to this one cgundermann is using. Those brackets sold with the extinguishers can come loose in the car and some sanctioning bodies won't allow them for that reason. It's not just the discharge you need to worry about but this is a potential missile in the even of a crash. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMWgoAnN9Cc

Those little extinguisher are better than nothing but an onboard system is more effective if you have an enclosed cockpit. In my race car I use a 5lb Stroud Safety clean agent system with FE36 for the cockpit and the fuel cell area. It's more than enough to extinguish a fire inside the car and allow me to get the car stopped and bail out. I have an open engine bay so there's not much you can do to protect the engine.

Anybody have experience with the Rennline seat mounted brackets? Beautiful engineering but pricy.... https://www.rennline.com/images/FE03-H3R.jpg.
