I sold a condo in a building built in 1906. The unit has 2 bedrooms in opposite ends of the unit, and the master, where the router and cable modem are, is separated from the rest of the unit by a 2 ft thick brick wall. I can't get the signal past the brick. If I move the router to another location, I get no signal in the master. Can I have 2 routers on the same network?

I do because the one FIOS put in doesn't have enough ports to include my garage. One is connected to the other though.

what kind of router? there are ones out there such as linksys where you can add a range extender, basically a repeater. Is it strictly wireless or both. If you can cable tem together then yes you can setup two routers.

Yes. Basically the second will be used as a network switch. I do the same thing with my detached garage. The first router feeds into the second router not through the regular input but through 1 of the four normal outputs. You have to go into the advanced settings of the router (the disc won't help you here) and give the second router it's own IP address. I usually set its IP address to http://192.168.1.2, the default for the first router in the line will be http://192.168.1.1 from most manufacturers. I've had a number of IT guys tell me this will never work but it has work flawlessly for years now. If I can help you further PM me.

Joe, are you thinking of running a cable from one router to the other side and plugging in a second wireless router or a wireless access point into the first one as Frank said, or are you thinking of adding a second cable modem from the first?

Also, are you thinking you need wireless in the bedrooms, or just an ethernet port? If all you need is a port, what I would consider is using a couple of powerline adapters. My in-laws have a prefab home with metal studs which is a pita for wireless. In their main living room / kitchen area we put the modem and wireless router, which feeds the main living area. He has a small office out in the garage, and so we came off one of the ports of the router to a powerline adapter and put another powerline adapter in the office to plug his desktop in.

My customer is complaining about not having Wi-Fi throughout his unit. Based on what I'm reading here, I can suggest a fix, but the customer is 85 years old so I don't want to have him call me every time his signal drops out.

I've just put powerline gear around my house. My tv, piano, laptop, playstation, media centre etc. are all connected now.

Joe,

So then you have two real options I think, run a cable from your router to the other side of the wall and put in a wireless access point for him to connect through, or if getting a cable through the wall is not possible, there are wireless powerline adapters out there, though I have no experience with them. Basically though, you would plug the wireless one into an outlet on his side of the wall, and plug another one into an outlet near your router and connect the adapter to the router with a cable.
