Over the last 18 years I have done a pretty good job of keeping up on touching up small chips and scrapes on the chassis. Time has come that in certain areas the powder coating is peeling so I need to do some larger repairs. (Mostly from some fluid like fuel, brake fluid, etc. dripping over the years.) Overall though the powder coating has held up extremely well.
First area of work is the crossover tube on the front of the chassis. With the motor out this winter I can get at all of this extremely well. I stripped the powder coating off this area this weekend and used the POR 15 system including the degreaser and etching steps per instructions. After two coats it at the very least needs a third (will sand with 600 grit paper - or whatever the directions said) before applying more POR 15. My issue though is that the POR 15 does color is a bit of a charcoal black rather than a true gloss black.
What I am thinking about doing is attempting to thin down some Rustoleum gloss black and brushing it over the POR. Yes this will not give me the same durability as POR 15 but the color should match much better as that is what I have used historically for the smaller repairs and it matched extremely well. My reason for wanting to thin down the Rustoleum is to hopefully allow it to smooth out and reduce as much as possible the brush marks.
Any helpful advise would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps a call to Eastwood?
