View Full Version : Where did you mount your 6-point harness to the frame?

I am using G-Force 6-point harnesses and having a heck of a time getting them installed. The rear upper firewall frame bar is at the perfect height for me for the shoulder straps, so that was easy to just weld some 1/4" weld-tabs to it. I welded the lap belt tabs to some 3/16" steel that I welded to the rear X-brace, but the crotch strap anchor is what is killing me. I don't know who perches their seat 5' above the floor board but all the diagrams show a fairly large amount of space between the seat bottom and the floor where you'd mount it. My seat is low. The harness mounting brackets have some height to them and above that there is the adjustment buckle. With the harness tabs welded all the way down to where the mounting point is flush to the top of the X-brace (any lower and the bolt wouldn't go through the frame), I still don't have enough room for the adjustment buckle and the harness mounting bracket before it hits the seat. I can shift the adjustment buckle above the seat, but obviously your crotch is right above the seat there so you have buckles up in your business, which isn't comfortable.

So I'm curious to hear from any of you who have mounted 6 points: Where did you mount the crotch brackets to the frame?

Thanks!

Thanks Metros.... So it looks like the two in the middle are for the crotch strap but they seem awfully far back. How far in front of that is the hole in your seat for them to route through? The instructions I was looking at said to mount them so the straps have a 20 degree angle back (from the horizontal) like in this picture (but I do like your setup as it gives a much easier place to mount): http://www.schroth.com/installation-instructions/en/images/image_038.gif

Here are some pics of my setup:

And now I'm trying this for the crotch strap mounts... This isn't the most secure way to mount them to the frame but these straps see the least load and it's the only way I could get them super low. It seems this will work but I'm interested in seeing what others have done too.

Shows how I mounted mine. Followed everything to the best that I could to FIA specs.

Nice TIG welds!

I'm doing this right now. Same harnesses. I bolted mine straight through the x frame. The seatbelt/seat solution is one of my least favorite aspects of the whole car. An extra inch would be wondrous. There's zero clearance for much of anything. Gotta install everything partway then bolt it down with no way to adjust it afterwards.

Edit: lay the straps flat. That way they're not loading in bending (ie straps face forward towards seat hole) and you gain more clearance.

Thanks Furnace! I'm getting there.

Mechie, that's a good idea about laying them flat. I'd have to put them to the rear a bit further to do that. Might give it a shot.

I hear you about least favorite part.... I have had the seat in and out of the car probably 25 times over the last week to fit, weld, check, repeat.

That 20* recommendation is relative to a straight vertical line down from the cam lock. Mine might be a little aggressive compared to that measurement. I'll have to double check it.

The cam lock is shown as perpendicular to the ground. I called Schroth about the submarine belts as the picture hindsight quoted shows 0-20 degrees perpendicular to ground, but the attached text in the installation checklist says the angle needs to be 20 degrees minimum.

They sounded a little confused, pulled up the checklist and then told me 20-40 degrees...

I'll post pictures of my setup once I'm done

Yea, this is a pain in the *** and IMO a huge oversight from FFR. Here's what I did:

For the mounts, I used some 90 deg harness brackets I got from Jegs. I also bolted the shoulder harness to the frame. I know wrapping is better, but I figured this would be a good compromise vs trying to figure out how to cut through 2 firewalls.

Looks good Guns. What do you think about the 6-point comfort? I am running G-Force and they are high quality, thick, and stiff, but not comfortable. The crotch straps are the worst part. The rest is livable. I'll probably just get used to it, but its weird because it forces my legs to be wider apart than they'd normally be while sitting which is really uncomfortable, especially when you have to work the clutch.

I've got the same NRG harnesses as GUNS, and I mounted them with G-Force hardware. The crotch straps seem OK when testing/fitting, but can't comment on long-term comfort, as my 818 isn't running yet. I spent a good deal of effort making sure my harness mounting conformed to safety guidelines, with respect to the angles of all the belts, proper wrapping around attachment hardware, etc... It's just astounding how poor/unsafe some installs are, even when done by the 'professionals' on reality TV.

Saturday night I was at a friend's b-day party and a group of us ended up telling old injury stories. It wasn't clear who won, me with 4 fractured vertebrae and a shattered hand, or the guy who was helivaced from Chuckwalla Raceway with a compound fracture of the femur :(. He mentioned that a couple years ago, there was a fatality at a track-day there: A passenger (driver's GF) was killed in a 4-point harness when the driver went off, hit a flag station and the passenger submarined. There were apparently quite a few other contributing safety issues, but this highlights the importance of an anti-submarine system (and having the lap belt properly fit on the hips/pelvis, not belly/abdomen).

So make sure to insist your passengers use the crotch strap, even if (especially if!) they're wearing a dress. :p

If your going to bolt belts or seats into the frame unless you have an insert welded into the frame its not a good idea to just "bolt it in". Hollow tubes do not provide good structural integrity you need an insert or a mounting tab. Be careful with safety! Canadian818 also talked about this here --> http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?13537-Lets-talk-Harnesses
