View Full Version : Header/Sidepipe alignment

The drivers side side pipe sits very level but the passenger side Sidepipe does not. There is about a 2 inch rise from the front to back. Looks kind of silly this way. I have had two different side pipes on the car and both do the same. Could the header flange to side pipe flange not be welded correctly? Not sure of the brand of header since I bought a partial build. Motor is a stroked 351. What are my options?

The term "some-assembly-required" really applies to getting the side pipes just right. There are a number of ways to get the proper alignment, which in my opinion is just slightly down at the exit - about 1/8" difference from the front of the pipe at the collector. You can use slightly smaller bolts at the header to sidepipe flange, which will give you lots of movement at the tip. Also, you can use adjustment spacers sold by Breeze (a vendor here) that work to space the pipes out from the body or to angle them - check Mark's website for details.

One final note, you should do the adjustment with the body on.

Mine have non-beveled spacers on both sides and smaller bolts...

Although you didn't say I'm assuming that you are using the 4 into 4 headers. My solution is similar to what Chris mentions however rather than switching to smaller 5/16" bolts I simply drill the holes in the flanges out to 7/16" and use the supplied 3/8" fasteners (or swap them out for longer bolts and deep brass nuts but that's a subject for another thread). Over the course of the 4 foot long pipe that extra wiggle room can make a big difference at the end of the arc.

Good luck!

Yes they are 4 into 4. I'll get the drill out and enlarge the holes then. Thanks.
