OK,
I'm in Ontario Canada, and I'm hearing through various forums that there is a major update to the MTO safety requirements for KIT and home built vehicles registered after July 1st of this year.
One rumor is that I may have to install bumpers........ugh.
Does anyone have information or can validate this information?
Has anyone actually installed bumpers on the Type-65......how does it look?
Thanks
Jonas
I think I have seen posts of bumpers installed behind the bodywork but I can't remember who it was

Karen Salvaggio ran thunder hill several years ago with a rear bumper. I've never see a front bumper...
:)
EDIT: I guess she did run a front bumper, sorta. I was a light bar:

Yes I remember seeing a post that to protect the gas tank someone put a steel bar across the back which was covered by the body shell.
Have not seen front bumpers which would ruin the look of the car if it had to be exposed!

I believe Ron Schofield worked through the bumper issues.
Not sure if this will pass but I felt the chassis needed to provide some additional protection here.

For the road oriented build it prompts some thought - the race prototype never got to being production car accessorized. Some Vette style hockey sticks in the rear may work, and the front, a street roadster hoop in a matching trapezoid around the nose opening, with wings.
Necessarily vague but something to start with. The issue is how much bumper a regulation requires. A lot of them were just large chrome trim pieces in the mid 60s, practically worthless.

EEP,
That is some solid reinforcement, looks good!

Yes - There has been some discussion on bumpers for the coupe and internal ones seem to be OK for NY state at least. See here: http://www.ffcars.com/forums/21-ffr-type-65-coupe/282973-ny-coupe-owners.html
Here is a pic of Karen's rear bumper that would be easy to duplicate and either make look presentable for the street or "loose" it after the inspection if you were creative:

After doing some more digging, the specs in the new MTO requirements seem extremely vague - they just say that the car must have bumpers. Ugh. Going with the under-body bumpers would for sure be the way to go if it will pass, but I need to find someone who can speak to the new safety regs in Ontario Canada.
Great information everyone

The real question is there a spec or standard they have to meet?
If not they may be something that can be hidden or very minimal. I can't imagine them passing a rule where they would have to be tested?

It doesn't look like any kind of testing is required - again, it's extremely vague. Just "bumpers required". I will be making calls to the MTO in a couple months to see if there is more clarification, but right now the rules are so new that no one knows how to interpret them.
Thanks John. I made quite a few improvements to the Roll Cage and chassis, basically making it a competition coupe but still functional as a daily driver. I borrowed quite a few ideas from Sam Stanley, who I met at Autorama with his coupe. He tracks his, and I just took the chassis improvements a little further.
Regardless of getting it passed for inspections, its my butt in that seat or my son's. I think we all realize that the chassis isn't the safest. A lot of 3/4 inch thin wall square tubing especially in the rear and sides. Where I added weight , I am going to reduce it by using carbon fiber replacing aluminum and steel components.

Sounds like a high end build. Post pics!
I also reinforced the side impact bar to a 2" square tube for that reason.

EEP, I'm interested in hearing about the chassis mods you did for safety. I'm expecting to do a lot of road miles with my build. With the rear structure as it is I'm a little afraid of doing an imitation of a Pinto if I would get rear-ended!
