Has anyone else thought of doing this? Even though I don't like the neon, I've always thought that it was a pretty sick little powerplant. And it would be easy to upgrade with the Mopar kits. Sounds mean too.

I don't know of one yet but don't rule out the 4 they put in the Caliber, it's pretty stout and has newer tech than the old Neon motor it replaced.
I'm a Mopar guy so I was in an on-line chat with the SRT engineers when they first told us about all the advantages of that motor over the older Neon powerplant.

I'm still thinking about this engine choice. Mopar sold stage kits for the neon SRT-4, I'm sure those same kits are probably available for the caliber motor too. They made good power and sounded totally bad ***. Would make a unique 818. Surely I'm not the only one who has thought of doing this...

No, but a Northstar V-8 would be easy to get, but they do sit side saddle.

This needs traction control and ABS just to stay alive!

Thought about the little slant 4 sprint motor or the drag 4 so I could put big heads on it. If your gonna go off kit then go crazy...

I built a SRT4 that did 400+ WHP, just better rods/pistons and bigger turbo. He drove it for 4 years before selling it.

What's the tranny bolt pattern on the SRT4? Are you stuck with the neon transaxle if this goes in an 818? Doubt it uses 318 pattern like the A4. Maybe after I put a hemi in the type 65 I'll run a turbo Mopar something in the 818...

I highly doubt any standard FWD transmission will package in the 818 without significant frame and suspension modifications. You're pretty much limited to Subaru, Porsche and some Audi options. (Basically, it needs to look like a RWD trans, but with front half-shafts sticking out each side.)

Hence the eco boost discussions. Inline 4 is too long without transverse axle or the GM style inline set up that derived from the eldorado. Porsche motivation would be interesting. Maybe the aftermarket Porsche transaxle derivatives with a CNC block? Oh...this was supposed to be a $15k kit car wasn't it!! Go electric.

15k indeed! Ha ha. I'm shooting for sub $20k (fingers crossed). I'd go electric in a heart beat if an honest range of 150mi could be had.

Huh?
The I4 isn't too long, it's too tall, and the Eldorado style wrap-around trans that nearly every FWD car has today is exactly what you don't want since it will run into the 818 suspension points.
The Boxster/Cayman trans is generally much cheaper than a decent Subie unit and they have an enormous following in the sand rail community.
