View Full Version : Positive Hood location

I never liked how much side to side play there is in the hood at the latch end. I realize this is a function of the hinges (FFR) but it means the only way to center the hood on closing was to hold it and then latch it. I decided to put in a hood pin at the back to give positive positioning on closing. The bracket is adjustable side to side, front to back and the pin adjusts up and down. The pin itself is just a 3/8" SS bolt that I cut the head off of and then rounded off a bit. The hood socket is a 3/8" X 1 1/2" SS fender washer. Now the bracket is pretty rough looking but it is just a prototype. I am going to Edmonton next week to visit my son and new grandson and he says he will laser cut me something nicer. May make an extra just in case I decide to build another after this one.

That should work fine. I saw something similar a builder did several years back, and he seemed pleased with the results.

Paul-
Nicely done. Like Bill, I too recall seeing another similar device. I cannot recall who the builder was, but I believe he was pleased with the result.
I think it will work well for you. I think it will also serve to keep the hood steady during driving as well.
Please let us know how it turns out, if you would.

That looks like something that might have been done on one of the original cars. I don't think it ever was but just saying it's not looking out of place or contrived. It appears to make sense. So that's good. Some people add something that looks a little wonky and really detracts from the overall look (not in this case). I also like your mechanical linkage. I'm sure when you get your finished product, it will look even better.
WEK.

Hey Paul,
What's the chances of laser cutting another, then selling me one?

Ian, Not being a vendor I am pretty sure I can't sell you one however I don't think it is going to cost much more to make two as opposed to one so when I get back I will just send you one for the cost of postage.

Paul,
Oh yes I hadn't considered that. Sorry Forum!
If you don't mind. That's very generous. Perhaps best to PM.
Cheers

The builder I believe I originally saw this idea was Greg M. Unfortunately, I can't find a link to his thread and pictures.
Here is a thread that briefly touches on how another builder made a similar centering device. See post #8 for pics of it.

I noticed that while driving in gel-coat, my hood did rub the body slightly in one spot on one side. That was prior to having the hood properly fitted, so when it comes back from the body shop, I'll have to check it closely for any side shifting, as I sure as heck don't want my fresh paint getting rubbed.

That one is nice and here I thought that for once I had an original idea.

Lol..Yeah well I guess with 7000 plus roadsters built or under construction, the areas on them that could use improvement have been touched upon at one time or another.
It's always great to see how individuals come up with their own solutions. Heck many of the mods, have since had mods, to improve them even further. Plus, it's good for new builders to see how they can do things during their build, rather than realizing they may need them after it's all finished.
