So in the past I have overlapped with the V notches the vinyl over the top edge of dash, is there a real reason for this ? I was thinking of just cutting the excess off ? Thoughts

It allows for better placement on curved areas and corners as well. otherwise it may bunch up.

I just cut mine off at the top leaving the vinyl about 1/2" longer than the dash and left it at that.
