View Full Version : Bell Crank Group Buy, Zero Decibel Motorsports

Mechie3
02-04-2016, 10:00 PM
Group buy for a transmission mounted bell crank shifter. Shifter is machined from 6061-T6 aluminum with a double sealed ball bearing for smooth crank motion.

Even if you already expressed interest in the feeler thread, please reiterate your direct interest in this group buy thread. If you wish to be included but only after a certain number of buyers are in, please indicate as such (for example, you'd like to be in, but only if we reach the 10 participant price level).

Thanks!

Works with:
Subaru 5 Speed transmission
Plastic FFR shifter
Metal FFR shifter
MR2 Shifter

Not compatible with:
6 Speed transmission
VCP Shifter

What it does:
Allows you to reduce the number of bends in the shifter for smoother and more direct feel
When used with an MR2 shifter the cable length can be reduced 7 feet (shorter length cables not supplied as part of kit)
The arm mounted to the input shaft is mounted further inboard for improved clearance with the rear bumper (almost 1" of the shaft would actually be cut off if desired)
Looks pretty fancy. In an open rear bumper setup it is visible from the outside.

# of people: Cost
5: $365
10: $280
15: $255
20: $250

What you get:
Base plate
Cable mounting plate
Bell crank with pressed in bearing
Selector arm (mounts to transmission input shaft)
Red anodized aluminum rod ends
Aluminum connecting rods
Aluminum Spacer for base plate
Stainless spacer for bearing
Stainless Hardware and nuts

50% deposit due when group buy closes

Unlikely as it'll take 2-3 weeks to machine the parts. International flat rate box shipping for a small box is only $30. I've gotten parts to Canada, Sweden, Finland, and South Africa, to name a few.

I'll price out shipping not in a flat rate box too, but the flat rate box at least puts a cap on your shipping cost.

I'll have to measure real parts to confirm but the model shows the head of the shoulder bolt being ~ 1.9" off the side of the transmission. The cable mounting plate is about 2.5" off the transmission.

I plan to close this out end of business Monday and get parts on order. 50% deposit will be due that week. Another $5 will be taken off if we hit 20 people. The margin on these parts isn't very good so when I order extra parts for general inventory and listed on the website the regular price will be higher just because the amount of risk this represents as stale inventory is much higher than any of my other parts.

Need to make two changes. The distance between the two rubber boots on the FFR cables is 1.5" shorter than the distance on my aftermarket cables. This did 2 things. 1: The coupler from the cable to the rod end was 1.5" too short for the FFR cable. 2: Because the 1/2" diameter coupler is longer, it will hit the neutral switch (on my cables, it's only 1/4" at that point). I'm moving the attachment point on the arm out by .34" and making a new arm and coupler to send to taco. Depending on CNC availability I hope to have it done Tuesday.

Also, is there anyone opposed to drilling a new hole in their trans shaft? The way this is designed, you move the arm up to the large diameter on the shaft and drill a new hole. This saves another 1" or so over the FFR setup for rear clearance (beyond the fact that my arm doesn't stick out like the FFR arm). Not drilling a new hole means the bell crank isn't perfectly vertical (not a big deal) but you would need a longer coupler (a bigger deal if I don't make them).

I think it would be great to have an option. I don't know how hard the shaft is but my engine/transmission are already mounted so it means drilling in place. It may not be a problem if the shaft is soft

The shaft is soft, I drilled right through it with a dewalt drill bit.

speedy: Got it

Samiam: www.boatersland.com search for teleflex 4300. I got the BC version, though it looks like they no longer carry that in the 7' variety. I'm using 7' and it's tight, but my shifter is a little farther forward. An 8' would give more headroom for positioning. I might actually pick up the 8' cables and sell my 7' cables (and the 6' ones I have lying around too...haha).

Upon further searching, I bought my 7' cables from here: http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=58306 They cost a bit more than from boatersland, but boatersland didn't have the 7' ones, only 6' and 8'. I say go with the 8' from boatersland and save some money.

B = bulkhead clamping (like the FFR cables) C = clamp style. I made my own mount for the clamp style. You can buy inexpensive clamps from Mcmaster (2695K85). BB is a double bulkhead, CC = double clamp. My bell crank requires bulkhead fittings in the rear. The front is up to you.

Direct link to 8' cable: http://www.boatersland.com/telccx43008.html

The teleflex cables market themselves as having the least backlash of any cable. Don't know if it's true or not but they're much tighter than the FFR cables.

Everyone: Got the new extension made, need to make the new arm. Moving a threaded hole .3".

Are there strength related issues that make the likely slightly more heavy stainless parts needed? I personally like the look of the red anodized aluminum like you have in your pictures. Nice work Craig!

Mechie3
03-02-2016, 09:39 AM
The aluminum should be strong enough while the stainless is overkill. If your transmission is working well there isn't that much force being put through them. Typically the bearing elements wear out prior to the bodies wearing out.

Hey everyone I finally got the updated arm and got it test fitted this weekend. He are the pics I took of it together. I also added the pics of what he changed on the new arm to allow the upper cable to miss the switch on the trans. The new upper cable extension rod wasn't available yet so I took pics of the shorter setup and some pics with a rod I made with a spare heim I had. The rods and heims you will receive will be the silver rod and red heim not the red tube and silver heim I used to finish test fitting. I have the trans shifter rod drilled to the new closer hole and extra cut off. Easy to move hole with his arm as a guide. It is real easy to install and has very smooth action. Hi Craig, Do you know when the bell crank shifters will be ready to ship? I sent $250 by PayPal 3/2/16 , I thought you had at least 20 buyers but maybe not. I would also like to order the steering rack extenders. Could you let me know the additional cost of the shifter and the cost of the extenders. Thanks for the awesome parts! NorCal Ray

The original eta from the shop was this past Friday but they didn't make it. Just waiting there call. I'll probably need a week to assemble and box things up too.

Do you have the larger tie rods? I think its the 05+ rack that uses an m16 thread. My extenders are all m16.

How much difference is the feel?

24.8% difference. :D

Hard for me to say. I ditched my FFR plastic shifter and cables a long time ago and I've had a few different setups in between.

Shop called and their parts are ready. I still need to finish the spacers and couplings and press in bearings. New shirts are done too (but not in my possession yet). Limited quanities of Dark Pink, Irish Green, and more of the sapphire blue and some new dark heather.

bbjones121
03-30-2016, 10:33 AM
Ha-ha. Yeah, hard to quantify a response to that question. I have factory Fives aluminum shifter. Definitely better than the plastic unit. I almost want to say it is more positive feeling than the reverse cable aluminum option.

Can't wait to see how it is with your linkage.

Here are the new shirts. They're currently in Rochester, NY. I'll have them in hand April 14th. If you want light gray or blue (some sizes) I have those in stock in Indy. If you want the other colors then I can hold shipment for 2 weeks or if you don't want to wait, for $3 can ship them separately (my cost to ship a shirt).

After making waaaay to many couplers and threading waaay to many holes (~180) I'm pretty much done.

Important! If you are using non FFR cables, please let me know the length from the bulkhead mount to the threaded cable end when the travel is centered. You might require a shorter coupler!!

Next steps:

Shipping: All US addresses will ship in a flat rate box for $16 (covers postage, 3% paypal fee of shipping, and packing materials).

Please paypal the balance to zerodbmotorsports at gmail dot com. For most people that will be $125 + $16 = $141. If you did not pay the deposit, please remit the full $250 + $16 = $266. Please see below for the information to include in a note with your payment:

Forum name: This helps me a lot to track orders.

Rod Ends: If you have a preference for stainless vs aluminum rod ends. No answer will get whatever I currently have the most of in stock.

T shirts: I currently have blue and gray in small, medium, XL, and a couple XXL. More shirts are arriving on the 14th. Color choice is first come first served. (see below for mix). Please let me know size and top three color choices in order. I will do my best to make sure everyone gets what they want. Also let me know if you've already received a free shirt this year.

Address: Sometimes paypal doesn't send an address. Please make sure you include your address in the note if you don't have a "ship to address" in paypal.

Other: Some people have ordered other parts they need shipped at the same time. Please remind me if you have in case my records aren't correct. If payment has not been sent for these extra items please ask me for a total amount + shipping (in case it won't fit in the flat rate box).

Thanks!

Hello Woody,
I purchased extras but the group buy pricing cutoff was 3-9-2016. Regular pricing was set at $300. If you're still interested you can send me a paypal at zerodbmotorsports at gmail dot com. Please include shirt size, top two or three colors (dark heather, gray, blue, green, pink), stainless or aluminum fittings, and if you're using non-FFR provided cables let me know that as well.

Thanks,
Craig

Mechie which cables did you measure these for and which shifter?

Mechie3
04-11-2016, 09:19 AM
I have the seastar CCX cables on my car. They require a 2.125" long coupler on the fore/aft cable. The FFR cables require a 3.625" coupler on teh F/A cable. I have both, just need to know which one to send to people.

I tested mine with the MR2 shifter, Taco tested his with the FFR shifter and cables.

Ok. My parents came into town last night and brought the shirts with them (saved on shipping, yay!).

Around 10pm my living room looked something like this:

Around 1am it started to look like this:

Then I went to bed and sometime this morning before work I had these at my front door:
http://i.imgur.com/pAHb9xn.jpg

I think I have 15 boxes packed and ready to ship out today. More will ship tomorrow. I do have a few loose ends:

Streeter Motorsports: Who are you? lol. I have a first name (Ben) but no forum name. What color shirt (choose from Dark Heather, Light Gray, Sapphire Blue, Pink)

Cobra Dude: Did you get a shirt yet this year? If no, size and top three colors. Stainless or aluminum rod ends?

The following people have paid a deposit, but no balance:

phillig: need rod end choice and shirt (if needed)
Will D: Need balance only
Ben1272: (streeter?)
Flynntuna: need balance only
newkit guy: Need balance (don't have black shirts, but do have dark heather)

International guys:
You're up next. Not using the USPS medium flat rate box because it's $45. Should be cheaper to use a smaller non flat rate box. I'll get them shipped and let you know shipping charges then.

Looking at your living room photos, are you building in enough margin to pay for the divorce? :)

Mechie3
04-15-2016, 12:08 PM
Hahaha!

no...

New price: $500 :D

The living room didn't look like that before 9pm (wife went to bed at 9:30), and I cleaned everything up by 1am so when she woke up for work the house was clean. She left for work at 7am, I ate breakfast, then started wrapping and taping, then picked up again before leaving. ;)

Craig -

Sorry for the delay - payment sent, twice actually by mistake:eek:...will send you a PM on that.

Aluminum rod ends, please.

I'm planning on running a MR2 shifter - not sure on my cables yet. Any advice there would be appreciated. Is it possible to run the stockers, or do I need custom lengths?

Still trying to get the engine and tranny in the car, so I'm a bit ahead of myself, but couldn't resist the improved linkage.

Mechie3
04-15-2016, 02:48 PM
No worries Will. I'll wait for your pm. I can refund the second payment easily, but want to make sure you haven't already tried to rescind it and make paypal get all confused. I can send you both length couplers. You could use the stock cables, but they'd be almost twice as long as necessary and with lots of extra loops.

I'm using these. You can get them in 7' but they cost more and limit your routing and shifter placement options.

There are some photos here including some exploded views:

http://zerodecibelmotorsports.com/products/bell-crank-mechanism-5spd/

Click on the pics for larger images. The only thing not shown are the 1/4" washers. Those are a late addition. They go in between the aluminum and the metal ball of the rod end. I got to thinking it might be possible for the rod ends to, over time, start to wear away the aluminum so I added the washers.

Everyone got the long coupler (with the single rod end) that works with the FFR cables. If that doesn't work let me know.

The shoulder screws for the ball bearing are loctited in place so if you take it apart to paint/powdercoat it might take some doing. I would recommend loctite on the screws going into the aluminum since if they back out you lose shift function.

I was starting to install my kit and I have a small problem, not with the parts though!

I tried to remove the FFR shift horn and I snapped off a punch while trying to remove the pin. I've been trying to drill it out, but it's slow going (apparently the punch was hardened).

Could someone please measure/verify that I can cut off the FFR shift horn and the length of the shift actuator rod that it is attached to and still have enough remaining to install the new part?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Mechie3
04-21-2016, 08:20 AM
Ohh...fun. /sarcasm.

One way to tell is to see if there is enough room on the back side of the OEM fork adapter and the larger diameter to fit the selector arm (A shaped clamp piece). If not, I'd recommend using a dremel to slice the oem fork adapter into a bottom and top half and pull it out that way.

mikeb75
04-21-2016, 09:08 AM
Thanks! That sounds easier. I'll split the fork adapter (thingie) and trim back any remaining pin.

Was easier! As you said, used Dremel and ultimately 5 HD cutoff wheels but got the adapter cut away and was able to grind down the remaining pin so the shifter went on smoothly.

Install is done now, very trick!

To everyone else who wants one, let me know! I'm going to be ordering some more parts soon, but need to know how many I should buy and, doing it group buy helps prevent me from having tons of parts on a shelf that I paid for out of pocket that I don't need (because I have the original one on my car ;) ).
