Any help identifying this alternator would be awesome. Working through some of the wiring and found that the harness has been altered. I could probably spend some time on the internet but I'd rather spend that time in the shop working. Anyone have a clue? Not even sure if it's a Ford alternator since I found no markings on it what so ever.

I need a new connector. Whoever wired this didn't realize it needs a jumper and cut 3 of the wire so short I can't tie on to them.

Thank Guys.

Hey Frank!
Glad you showed the connector 'cause that was the giveaway---it's a GM "CS" series external fan alternator from the 1990s. Pigtails are available from a number of online sources. Here's one:

Thank K, am I safe in assuming I need to make a jumper from the Red to the brown exciter wire?

Man Frank, you're sending me into the "way back machine" here. It's been 15 years or more since the days when I was messing with Jeeps and 4X4 GM trucks where upgrading to the CS alternator was done to be able to run the big lights and stuff... I found this which should help:

The brown exciter wire ("L") is hot when the ignition switch is in start or run and does not connect directly to the big red wire. Beyond that you need continuity between "S" terminal and the + lug on the alternator via a jumper on the pigtail. Pay attention to the note about requiring a charge lamp or resistor on the exciter wire (15 + years and old age hasn't caused me to forget that without it the regulator will not be long lived).

Hope that helps!

Just what I need Kleiner. It wires very similar to a FoMoCo alternator since it seems since you still need a change light or a resistor. It's sure is a good thing this engine wasn't run much after the first start. I found no charge light or resistor in line and it looks like the excite wire was wired directly to a 12V switched source with no wire running to the S terminal. Yikes!

Hey Frank,
Just for $hit$ and to satisfy my curiosity...check for continuity between the S terminal and alternator + post and let me know what you find. Somewhere in the foggy memory banks I kinda' halfway recall that they are connected internally and if so the external jumper would be redundant. Can't say for sure though--- that was many beers and lots of solvent fumes ago!

Will do, but it will have to wait until the weekend. Up to my ears with work right now.
